George III, dated 1816 1816 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Atkinson. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Glued around the edge to linen, and padded with wadding. Chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on fine linen ground. Meandering leafy border. Colours olive green, cream, dark green, light green, magenta, copper and gold. Signed and dated ''Mary Atkinson : Taught by E. Williams 1816''. Finely embroidered motif of Britannia (upper torso and head is drawn on the canvas, not stitched) standing at the shore below a tree, sailing ship in the background. Good. A few holes. Stain to the ground above Britannia. A few pale stain specks. No stitch loss. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in good condition, ready to hang 17.25ins by 12.5ins wide   « Less

George IV, dated February 27 1827 Large 1827 Silkwork Sampler by Crissy Longden. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours copper, cream, blue, green, pale blue, black, dark green and gold. Alphabets A-Z in lower case and numbers 1-7. Verse reads ''The year rolls round and steals> away The breath that first it gave> Whateever we do where er we be> Were travelling to the grave!''. Signed and dated ''crissy longden worked This sampler february 27 in The year 1827 Warmsworth clif aged 13 years''. Warmsworth is a place in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. A wonderful set of motifs, including potted flowering plants, dogs, rabbits, a fox, flowers, birds, owls, squirrels, hearts, fir trees, butterflies, lady and gentleman figures and two houses. Generally Good. A few small holes along the bottom. A few small stains, uniform age darkening and some old glue stains around the edge. Very minor stitch loss to the border and one divider line. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang. 21ins by 16.25ins wide   « Less

William IV, dated 1836 Large 1836 Silkwork Sampler by Maria Druce. Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass. Tacked to wood with card backing. The sampler is finely worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Triangle border inside a meandering floral border. Colours gold, blue, black, magenta, copper and greens. Verse entitled ''A CONTEMPLATION ON NIGHT.'' reads ''When the pure soul is from the body flown,> No more shall Night''s alternate reign be known;> The sun no more shall rolling light bestow,> But from the Almighty streams of glory flow.> Oh! May some nobler thought my soul employ,> Than empty, transient, sublunary joy.> The stars shall drop, the sun shall lose his flame,> But thou, O God: for ever shine the same.''. Signed and dated ''18 Maria Druce Aged 12 Years 36''. A wonderful set of finely embroidered motifs, including a house with a garden below clouds and dogs on the lawn, birds, angels, squirrels nibbling on a nut, fir trees, dogs, blossoming trees, lions, flowers, sheep, butterflies, fruit baskets and potted flowering plants. Generally Good. A number of holes, and a few areas where the ground is thinning. A few stains and uniform age darkening of the ground. Minor stitch loss to the triangle border. Some colours are faded, but the silks are still bright and glossy. No colour run. Stretching is very slightly uneven. Frame in good condition, ready to hang. 24.75ins by 22.25ins wide   « Less

Circa 1830 Circa 1830 Silkwork Sampler by Elleanor Corps. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral strawberry border. Colours dark green, cream, dark blue, light blue, copper, gold and green. Verse reads ''Praise to thee, thou great Creator.> Praise be thine from every tongue.> Join . My soul, with evry creature.> Join the universal song.''. Signed and dated ''Elleanor Corps her Work in the 10th year of her Age 18..'' (the last digits of the date unstitched). A wonderful set of motifs, including a house with a lady and gentleman in the garden, dogs, birds, flowers, fruit baskets, crowns, Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk and flowering trees. Good. A few holes along the bottom edge and in the top left corner. Slight staining to the top half. No stitch losses. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang. 18.5ins by 12.25ins wide   « Less

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours blues, greens, silver, magenta, cream and gold. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-10. Verse reads ''See how the lilies flourish white and fair> See how the ravens fed from heaven are> Then never distrust thy God for clothes and bread> Whilst lilies flourish and the ravens fed> Gay dainty flowers go swiftly to decay> Poor wretched lifes short portion flies away> We eat we drink we sleep but lo anon> Old age steals on us never thought upon''. Signed and dated ''Jane Roberts Anno Domini 1824''. A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a house with a garden, the sun, birds, flowers, recumbent stags, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets and flower baskets. Generally Good. Several holes around the edge and a couple to the centre. Old tack holes with rust staining to the linen edging. A few light stain specks. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. Slight colour run around the darker green threads. Unevenly stretched. Colours pinks, cream, red, pale blue, gold, black, olive green, grey and dark green. Verses read ''How few and evil are thy days> Man of a Woman born> Trouble and peril haunt thy ways> Forth like a flower at noon> And dost thou look on such an one> Will god to judgment call> A worm for what a worm hath done> Against the lord of all> Man lieth down no more to wake> Till yonder arching sphere> Shall with a roll of thunder break> And nature disappear> Oh hide me till thy wrath be past> Thou who canst kill or save> Hide me where hope may anchor fast> In my redeemers grave''. Minor stitch losses to the signature, date and a couple of the motifs. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Stretching is very slightly uneven. The sampler is worked in wool and silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours red, cream, blue, light brown, white, black, light green, orange, olive green and pink. Verse reads ''Jesus stands with open arms> Inviting sinners home> His voice contains a thousand charms> And every charm says come''. Signed and dated ''Jane Ingham''s Work 1835.''. A good set of motifs, including a large building with gatehouses, possibly Solomon''s temple, flanked by trees, birds, flowers, fruit baskets, fir trees, fruit trees, figures and potted flowering plants. Generally Good. One hole to the left hand edge. Some plucks to the ground in places. Stain at the bottom of the sampler. Very minor stitch loss to a couple of the potted flowering plant motifs. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. Colour run around the verse and signature. Stretching is slightly uneven. Depicts a map of England and Wales with surrounding seas, oceans and channels. The map includes county names and major towns within the counties. Generally Good. Several small holes. Some dark staining behind the map. Some stitch losses to the border and motifs. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading, the silks bright and glossy. No colour run. The sampler is worked in wool, with a small amount of silk, on canvas ground, in backstitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours olive green, blue, light brown, dark brown, pink, light green, red and cream. Signed and dated ''Jane Clarkson Work 1856''. A good set of motifs, including a red brick house with a garden, farm animals, sheep grazing on the lawn and two swans in a pond, fruit trees, fir trees, a large flower basket, potted flowering plants, butterflies and flowers. Good. Old tack holes with staining around the edge. A few light stains and specks elsewhere. Minor stitch losses to the swans, pond and bottom of lawn. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. Very slight colour run around the signature threads. Unevenly stretched.
