Jean-François Millet (October 4, 1814 — January 20, 1875) was a French painter and print-maker ) etchings , wood cuts and Lithography) and one of the founders of the Barbizon school in rural France. Millet is noted for his scenes of peasant farmers; he can be categorized as part of the naturalism and realism movements.
After his first painting, a portrait, was accepted at the Salon of 1840, Millet returned to Cherbourg to begin a career as a portrait painter. However, the following year he married Pauline-Virginie Ono, and they moved to Paris. After rejections at the Salon of 1843 and Pauline's death by consumption, Millet returned again to Cherbourg.] In 1845 Millet moved to Le Havre with Catherine Lemaire, whom he would marry in a civil ceremony in 1853; they would have nine children, and remain together for the rest of Millet's life. In Le Havre he painted portraits and small genre pieces for several months, before moving back to Paris.
It was in Paris in the middle 1840s that Millet befriended Constant Troyon, Narcisse Diaz, Charles Jacque, and Théodore Rousseau, artists who, like Millet, would become associated with the Barbizon school; Honoré Daumier, whose figure draftsmanship would influence Millet's subsequent rendering of peasant subjects; and Alfred Sensier, a government bureaucrat who would become a lifelong supporter and eventually the artist's biographer. In 1847 his first Salon success came with the exhibition of a painting Oedipus Taken down from the Tree, and in 1848 his Winnower was bought by the government. « Less

A large scale work, oil on canvas. Jewel tones and wonderful details. Eugene Andrew Agafonoff (Evgeny Andreevich Agafonov) was a Ukrainian painter, graphic artist and scene-designer who was born in 1879. Evgeny Agafonov was born to family of a merchant. He got his first art education in St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1899–1907. He studied under the guidance of P. Kovalevsky and F. A. Roubaud. In 1910 Agafonov was awarded gold medal for the painting Draymen at the regional South Russia exhibition in Ekaterinoslav. In 1905–1907 during Revolution, Agafonov illustrated Kharkov satirical magazines Shtyk (“Bayonetâ€), Mech (“Swordâ€), Zloy Dukh (“Malignant Demonâ€) and others. In March 1906 Agafonov together with A. N. Grot, V. D. and D. D. Burlyuk participated in the 7th exhibition of the Cirlce of Kharkov artists (1900–1908). Since 1908 he exposed his works at the exhibitions of the Association of Kharkov artists, at the exhibition of the group Zveno (“Linkâ€) in Kiev (1908), in Rostov-on-Don and Kursk. In 1909 Agafonov founded the experimental theatre Blue Eye in Kharkov on the basis of the avant-garde studio Blue Lily. He designed a lot of performances for this theatre, including The Stranger by A. Blok. The theatre worked only two seasons and was closed in February 1911. Circa 1991
A rare and important painting by Anatoly Belkin. This work is signed with his monogram and dated 91. Translating the painting, yielded an interesting work. Tea is Good. Vladimir Mayakovsky. Unjust. Here is how I see it. The painting is filled with Russian words. After a bit of research we've uncovered a lot about the artist and the painting. The painting does depict a samovar and tea is a very popular drink in Russia. There is also a lot more going on in the painting. The top word does read Tea and then is Very Good. The rest of the words have a real political meaning. The name at the top is Vladimir Mayakovsky. He lived from 1883 to 1930 and was an important figure in Russian poetry. His life and works are filled with controversy, triumph and tragedy. And, about that newspaper. PRAVDA is quite recognizable. What is less recognizable is the play on words. By adding a couple letters before and after the word for Pravda, Mr. Belkin has transformed the word for truth to the word for Injustice. Just next to the word Pravda, are the words Workers of the World Unite. Mr. Belkin was born in 1953 in Moscow, Russia. He studied, lives and works in Leningrad, St. Petersburg. His artistic education included studies at I. E. Repin Institute of Painting (1963-1970) and at I. E. Repin Institute (1970-1972). Being one of the youngest representatives of nonconformist movement, he participated in the majority of exhibitions of "informal" artists. His first personal exhibition took place at Dzerzhinsky Culture Club (1977). Since 1976 his works have been included in foreign expositions of "resistant" art in New York, Sent-Luis, Washington, San Francisco, Bochum, Paris, Mongeron and other cities. Mr. Belkin is a member of the St. Petersburg Organization of the Creative Union of Artists of Russia. He is also the founder and the editor of the magazines "Sobaka.ru " (2000), and "Veshch.doc" (2005). Mr. Belkin continues to paint. « Less
