These mirrors can be attributed to the “Looking Glass Establishment†of Herman Fersenheim of 76 Beekman St., NYC.
Very similar mirrors are pictured and described on Page 358 of the February, 1976 issue of The Magazine Antiques.
Photographs depict this genre of overmantel mirror gracing rooms in The White House in the 1880’s.
These are typical architectural style mirrors in what is known as “The Column Styleâ€.
• Palmettes with scrolls grace the acroteria adorning each pediment.
• Graduated beads adorn the scrolls on either side of the palmettes.
• The frieze is ornamented with a pair of lozenge-shaped relief carvings, terminating in fleurs-de-lis.
• Ancones surmounted with palm leaves support each capital.
• A cluster of fruit depends from the scrolls supporting each palmette.
• Strawberries depend from the central scrolls supporting the acroteria.
• Cornucopia support the smaller scrolls beneath the central palmette or coquillage.
• The original, heavy plate glass in these looking glasses is brilliant, true, unclouded and nearly flawless, even after almost 140 years.
• Overall Height is 63 inches.
• Overall Width is 61 inches.
• Small cracks in the gesso are apparent. There is one chipped area on the top of the cornice of the north mirror where a repair has been made. Overall, however, these mirror frames are in wonderful shape for their age.
These mirrors provide a crucial decorative feature for any serious restoration of a Brownstone, late 19th century townhouse or 19th century estate. The pair have been used upon the north and south walls of a vaulted gallery room for years but could serve well adorning formal rooms off of a central foyer. It is unusual to come upon a matched pair of these rare, stately looking glasses.
These mirrors are currently seated upon gold-painted wooden supports in lieu of the mantels which they should adorn. The supports can remain with the mirrors, should the buyer so desire.
The photograph of the north mirror shows the south mirror, facing it, in reflection.
All items are sold "as is". These are antique looking glasses; small nicks and scratches are part of the beauty of an antique and are not described unless significant.
These looking glasses may be picked up in Acton, MA.
A freight delivery can be arranged for destinations beyond our local pick-up area. E-mail for a freight estimate.
These mirrors were purchased at auction in the Philadelphia area in the early 1950’s. They were subsequently moved to Massachusetts. They still have their wooden packing crates from the move to Massachusetts. Please ask any questions prior to offering to purchase.
