43827 Antique Karabagh, Caucasus, late nineteenth century - A highly abstract composite medallion with finials sits within a warm ivory field on this virtually one-of-a kind More »
43827 Antique Karabagh, Caucasus, late nineteenth century - A highly abstract composite medallion with finials sits within a warm ivory field on this virtually one-of-a kind antique Karabagh. Similar medallions hover above and below the central one with a array of stylized vines and tiny animals filling the areas in between. Multiple narrow borders combine to frame the field. The range and depth of the color is outstanding, but perhaps the most unusual feature of this extraordinary piece is way that the borders indent slightly to make space for the central medallion, imparting a dynamic elasticity to the overall design.

Antique Bakshaish Long Rug, Persia, late nineteenth century. Although the design of linked hexagonal medallions on a camel ground is of classic Serab derivation, the bolder, more graphic design and color, and the weave as well, all identify this magnificent carpet as Bakshaish. The sense of color in the medallions is extraordinary, especially against the cool camel ground. The dense yet understated figure-eight and barber pole borders provide the perfect framing contrast fro the openness of the field.

Antique Karabagh Long Rug, Caucasus, late nineteenth century. A dazzling design of complex stylized palmettes set within a honeycomb lattice repeats down the length of this crisply elegant antique Karabagh. The design elements are mostly in gold and pastel tones with sparing splashes of richer color for accent, while the dark ground functions as little more than an emphatic outline around the main forms. The figure-eight double vinescroll main border echoes the honeycomb design of the field, while its flanking blue-ground running dog minor borders at just the right touch of framing contrast.

Antique Heriz Rug, Circa 1900 This splendid Heriz runner has an interesting mix of stylized pendants laid out in an unusual manner. What makes this so intriguing is the unconventional execution of the pendants and the randomness in which the weaver placed them.

Antique Heriz Serapi Runner, Persia, late nineteenth centuryHeriz carpets in a runner format are not uncommon, but most tend to belong to the sub-group known as Karadja. More »
Antique Heriz Serapi Runner, Persia, late nineteenth centuryHeriz carpets in a runner format are not uncommon, but most tend to belong to the sub-group known as Karadja. Runners like this one belonging to the finest Heriz or 'Serapi' group, however, are rare. Here a series of graphic abstract medallions repeat along a warm red terracotta field with highly geometric floral elements interspersed as space fillers. The boldly abstract vinescroll borders echo the tribal feeling of the field design, as well as its lovely palette of ivory, soft blues, and greens set against the terracotta tones. A truly extraordinary piece.

Antique Malayer, Persia, late nineteenth centuryA series of ivory medallions with projecting hooks repeats down the field of this exuberant antique Malayer. The field ground is navy blue, but it appears as little more than a dark outline around the dense, closely worked red vinescroll detail that surrounds the medallions. Zig-zag triangular red cornerpieces with lush vinescroll filling complete the field with its dominant red theme. An ivory ground vinescroll border frames the field with the requisite contrast, while also echoing the palette and detail of the medallions. More reminiscent of Persian Bidjar rugs, this design and palette is unusual within the Malayer genre.
Style: Malayer

Antique Khotan, East Turkestan, early 20th centuryAntique Khotans were woven in East Turkestan, located along the Silk Road at the crossroads of civilization. As such they represent a blending of diverse cultural traditions, always fresh and unpredictable. This magnificent example boasts a classic Khotan design, an allover field pattern of floral bouquets laden with leaves and pomegranates, all set against a midnight blue ground. The inner border displays the ‘hundred and one gifts’ motif, a classic Chinese theme, while the outer one has a classic Chinese cloudband pattern with a meander guard stripe. The middle border, however, has a design from further west, a vinescroll of Persian origin. But despite this diversity, the result is marvelously unified and harmonious, and this is the magic of Khotan design. The dominant soft golden tones balance the blues well, making this a first-rate decorative rug.
Style: Khotan
Origin: East Turkestan

Antique Bidjar, Persia, late nineteenth centuryA grand ogival medallion with elaborate finials floats majestically within an abrashed blue-green open field on this stunning antique Bidjar. A quatrefoil of palmettes and leafy sprays fill the interior against a red ground with graphic gold edging. Golden spandrels filled with a lively vinescroll design complete the field, enclosed by a similar main border on a soft red ground. Reciprocal trefoil minor borders flank the main one, enhancing its framing effect against the spandrels, while an outer blue-green edge zone reprises the tonality open field. For color and graphic power, this Bidjar has no peer within its genre.
