Antique Chinese Rank Badge, China, Early 19th Century - Woven for the wife of a fourth rank military official, this Chinese rank badge depicts a stylized tiger symbolizing courage and ferocity. In addition the minute painted stripes, the hindquarter of the tiger is decorated with the characteristic whorled fur. Lotus blossoms, chrysanthemum motifs and serpentine cloudbands decorate the background while endless knots and colorful fish emerge between the traditional wave patterns. Woven with a formal composition, the paradise flycatcher faces left toward the sun, which is the symbol of the emperor. Metallic scrollwork and gold embroidery decorate the fretwork border and background while lotus blossoms, peonies and traditional ruyi-style clouds in gradient shades of indigo blue fill the sky.
