Antique Kashan, Persia, 1900s - An allover pattern of interlacing flowering vines and palmettes repeats in complex symmetry across the soft blue field of this classically elegant antique Persian Kashan. Vines are rendered primarily in golden tones with sparing us of soft red and darker blue for accents. The border is comprised of grand palmettes and cloudbands set against a soft red ground that provides a delicate framing contrast to the field design. Antique Kerman, Persia, circa 1900A classic Persian compartment pattern of gently scalloped ogival cartouches or medallions unfolds in allover symmetry on the field of this supremely elegant antique Kerman. Each compartment is filled with richly detailed palmette ornament in soft pastel colors, set alternately against a light and dark cream ground. Several smaller vinescroll borders frame the composition, nicely contrasting the grand scale and sweep of the field design, while preserving the same range of colors. The palette is exceptionally delicate, offering considerable decorative potential.

Antique Tabriz, Persia, Early 20th Century - Tabriz carpets like this are famed for their fidelity to classical Persian forerunners. In the case of this extraordinary example the model was undoubtedly a classical Caucasian carpet, one of the so-called ‘dragon rugs’ of the seventeenth century. Here the design consists of a bold floral lattice in drop=repeat symmetry with palmettes and ‘dragons’ filling the intervening spaces. The vinescroll border is classical Persian, however, although it harmonizes beautifully with the field. The soft palette of golden and cinnamon tones makes this a first-rate decorative carpet in a contemporary setting.

Antique Tabriz from Northwest Persia, late nineteenth centuryThe supremely elegant antique Tabriz is the woven embodiment of the romantic Persian notion of paradise the garden. Four slender cypress trees grow from the lower border amidst tree-like vines that send their sinuous branches upward. This composition conveys a sweeping sense of movement in a contemplative setting. Smaller cypresses and floral sprays make up the border. The meditative, minimal palette features an ivory ground with delicate details in soft greens, terracotta, pale gold, camel, chestnut, and slate blue.

Antique Oushak / Ushak, Turkey, late nineteenth century This lovely antique Oushak is unusually detailed in its treatment of the Classical palmette design. The various forms are richly articulated with complex linear contours and multi-colored interior embellishment. The linking vines are so fine that they hardly stand out, giving pride of place to the palmette elements. The border has the same design as the field, but against a soft salmon rather than mauve or blue ground. Despite the many exceptional features of this carpet, what truly stands out is the varied coloration in soft pastel tones.
