Antique Sarouk, Persia, circa 1900 A lush diamond openwork medallion of flowery vine clusters hovers within a vibrant terracotta open field on this extravagant antique Sarouk. In the four corners are spandrels whose inner area is articulated in openwork like the medallion while its outer corner area is made up of arabesque trefoils. Add additional corolla of loose sprays floats at the edge of the large oval field. The main border reworks the field elements as a continuous leafy vinescroll set on a navy ground to provide a darker contrasting frame for more open structure of the field design. Antique Sarouk, Persia, circa 1910 - This lavish and unusual antique Persian Sarouk has a medallion design set within an open field. While much of the composition stems from classical Persian design tradition, a great deal of the detail consists of naturalistic roses and flowers that undoubtedly reflect the design of French Aubusson and Savonnerie carpets, as does the cartouche-like frame within the cornerpieces, and the reliance on reds, lavenders, and soft green colors. The vinescroll palmette border takes us back squarely into classical Persian tradition, although it complements the western-influenced field design remarkably well. Antique Khotan, East Turkestan, early nineteenth century - Antique Khotans like this are the pre-eminent rugs of the silk road, combining as they do artistic traditions from across the Asian continent. This one, however, is remarkably Chinese in its taste. The field has a design of openwork floral pom-pom medallions in staggered array with diagonal effects achieved through the use of different colors. These medallions recur in simple serial arrangement in the main border, but set against a raspberry ground in contrast to the cool tan of the field. An inner minor border of openwork vinescroll helps set the main border apart from the field, with an outer cloud border to complete the composition. Despite the prevailing Chinese aspect of the design, the delicate pastel palette is in the best Khotan tradition. Vintage Art Deco Rug from France, 1920's- This charming antique French Deco carpet (in the style of Jacques Emile Ruhlmann) reinterprets the naturalistic floral repertoire of nineteenth century Savonnerie rugs within a new and simpler early modern aesthetic. A central medallion of leaves and flowers is enclosed by a leafy border, which repeats at the outermost edge. But virtually the whole carpet is an open field of red, punctuated only by thin concentric bands or outlines.
