Antique Khorassan Persian Carpet, late nineteenth century A rich and unusual allover design of flowering vases repeats rhythmically across the deep blue ground of this lush antique Khorassan. The interest of the design is heightened by the lovely coloration with deep persimmon, wedgewood blue, pale green, tans, and aubergine. The last color, used sparingly, recurs as the ground of the cartouche main border, whose vertical repetitions nicely echo the arrangement of the vases in the field. Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth centuryWhile Sultanabad carpets are famed for their monumental treatment of classical Persian vinescroll and medallion designs, this rare and beautiful example has an allover pattern of finely detailed leafy sprays that create a subtle diamond lattice effect against a lovely soft terracotta ground. It is in the border with its large-scale palmette vinescroll that we return to a more traditional Sultanabad design, although here as well, the drawing remarkably fine and delicate. The palette of the carpet with its soft autumnal or orange and pale green tonalities, and its use of dark brown and blue for accents, is also classically Sultanabad, as is the lustrous wool of the pile. Each of these is really a sequence of concentric medallions filled with a small scale Herati design on differently colored grounds. This Herati design recurs on the background of the field as well. The outermost soft blue ground of the medallions appears to interrupt the overall Herati pattern like a window looking into infinite sky. The carpet is framed by small, finely patterned multiple borders rather than one large one, providing a unifying texture or setting that allows the medallions to take pride of place.
