Antique Swedish Carpet, dated 1927 This lovely Swedish carpet is a magnificent homage to the traditional Swedish Rollakan or flatwoven tapestry, although here it is rendered in thick pile. The field has an allover design of fleurons and palmettes in cinnamon, ivory and saffron on tan, with a row of stylized horsemen at the top and bottom edges. A bold cinnamon ground border encloses the whole composition with monumental flair, making the piece a worthy, highly decorative successor to its traditional inspiration.

Antique Mehajeran Sarouk, late nineteenth centuryMehajeran Sarouks like this are prized for their more graphic and monumental design sense as well as the richness of their color. On this lush example a profusion of leafy, flowering vines in golden and terracotta tones writhes sinuously across a deep blue ground that accentuates and underscores the effect of the design. The terracotta ground border provides an exquisite contrast in its scale, color, and the crisper, more angular style of its drawing. Sarouks of this kind are more assertive than later examples, and much harder to come by.

The border reverses the color effects of the field with its palmette vinescroll set against a navy ground. This example is distinctive in its use of animal inhabitants derived from classical Persian court carpets. Galloping deer cavort along the lower edge of the field while exotic birds perch among the vines. The lustrous wool an thick pile underscore the aura of heavenly luxury.

Antique Amritsar, India, circa 1900. The splendor of the Mogul Dynasty is alive and well on this sumptuous antique Indian Amritsar. Like the great Mogul court classical Persian inspiration, although combined with more exotic, native Indian plant motifs as well. The palmette and cloudband border reverses the gold and ivory palette of the field for framing contrast, yet preserving its scale for a unified decorative effect. What is not classical Indian or Persian is the palette, with its soft, luminous, decorative coloration in place of the more vibrant, pungent color typical of Mogul carpets.

43080 Antique Kerman, Persia, circa 1900 - Antique Kermans are the proud heirs of a long tradition reaching back to the great Persian carpet masterpieces of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but rarely do they capture so effectively the design and stately presence of such forerunners. This exquisite example is descended from the classical Kerman ‘vase carpets,’ with its allover design of lush vines and palmettes emerging from stylized amphorae. A richly detailed vinescroll border frames the field, using a smaller scale as a visual counterpoint. Unlike the vibrant classical forerunners, the palette here is subdued and elegantly decorative.

Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth centuryThis exceptional antique Sultanabad has a ‘Herati’ pattern spreading across the soft sage field, although its greater scale and spontaneous drawing gives the familiar design a distinctive new quality. The border is comprised of star cartouches linked by vines. Its cinnamon ground echoes the color of various palmettes within the field, just as the outer stripe of sage picks up its ground color.
