Antique Tabriz from Northwest Persia, circa 1900 A classic arabesque medallion design with cornerpieces unfolds across a deep aubergine ground that barely shows amidst the intervening sprawl of leafy vines and palmettes. The border with its numental design of cartouches is equally classic, but the limited color scheme of tans and aubergine, however, departs from the rich palette of classical prototypes, making this piece a supremely decorative carpet.

Antique Tabriz Oriental Carpet, Persia, late nineteenth centuryThis elegantly sumptuous antique Tabriz has a design and palette reminiscent of the finest embroidered Kashmir shawls. The medallion format is kept to a minimum; most of the field has a small-scale repeat of tiny medallions reminiscent of boteh or paisley motifs in the soft Kashmir palette. A richer deeper coloration appears in the medallion and cornerpieces, and in the main arabesque vinescroll border, providing a balance or counterpoint to the field. Rarely can a carpet achieve such richness and restraint simultaneously.

Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth centuryA mina khani pattern or trellis of arabesques and palmettes unfolds dynamically across the field of this strikingly lovely antique Sultanabad. The drawing is rather free, informal, and animated, imparting an almost playful aspect to the composition. The real glory of the carpet, however, is the use of color, with its soft reds, rose, pale blues, apricot, mauve, and ivory, all set against a variegated pale cocoa field. In contrast to the dynamic twists and turns of the field design, the palmette border is more vertical and tranquil, and its rose ground offers an exquisite complement to the cocoa field.

Bold shield-like medallions emanate outward from the center toward the edges of the field, connected by a monumental lattice of zigazgs. Lovely sprays of palmettes and striking angular tendrils fill the intervening spaces, all against a warm ivory-tan ground. Similar sprays make up the imposing border. Yet the beauty of the carpet resides not only in its grand design, but in the lovely balance of harmonious colors - apricots, rich yellow golds, and wedgewood blues.

The soft, beautiful coloration of the carpet, however, with its pale apricots, goldenrod, and pale slatey blues departs from the vibrant palette of classical Kermans.
