Early Islamic Aubergine Glass Bottle - G.0336, Origin: Jericho, Palestine, Circa: 600 AD to 800 AD, Dimensions: 3.1" (7.9cm) high x 2.3" (5.8cm) wide, Catalogue: V1, Collection: Islamic, Style: Blown/Applied Decoration, Medium: Glass, Early Islamic glass is often indistinguishable from late Classical/Byzantine and Sassanian models. The advent of Islam and the creation of a vast political empire did not have an immediate impact on the practices of glass-making workshops that had existed for centuries, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean coastal regions. By the seventh century most of the techniques used to work glass by hand had been perfected. The major breakthrough occurred in the first century BC with the invention of glass- blowing. Rather than casting vessels in molds which was an expensive and time-consuming process, the blow-pipe increased the speed and efficiency of production. However, during the early centuries of Islam, glass-makers used this ancient technology in new ways to produce distinctively Islamic wares. They excelled in the application of decoration to blown wares and this small globular bottle is a perfect example of this trend. « Less

Early Islamic Glass Bottle - GF.0100, Origin: Eastern Mediterranean, Circa: 700 AD to 900 AD, Dimensions: 3.25" , (8.3cm) high, Collection: Islamic, Style: Blown, Medium: More »
Early Islamic Glass Bottle - GF.0100, Origin: Eastern Mediterranean, Circa: 700 AD to 900 AD, Dimensions: 3.25" , (8.3cm) high, Collection: Islamic, Style: Blown, Medium: Glass, Glass has been a prized and sought after material for centuries. Its clarity, brilliance, translucency, and molten malleability appealed to ancient civilizations just as these qualities appeal to our modern aesthetic sensibilities. This small bottle has a flattened globular body, which terminates in a narrow neck. The narrow opening suggests that it was used as a spinkler for perfumed water, such as rosewater. The surface has a purple/pearly white patina caused by weathering over the centuries which lends the surface a wonderful texture. « Less

Islamic Green Glass Bowl - GF.0121, Origin: Jericho, Circa: 900 AD to 1000 AD, Dimensions: 2" (5.1cm) high, Collection: Islamic Art, Style: Mold Blown/Tooled, Medium: Glass, More »
Islamic Green Glass Bowl - GF.0121, Origin: Jericho, Circa: 900 AD to 1000 AD, Dimensions: 2" (5.1cm) high, Collection: Islamic Art, Style: Mold Blown/Tooled, Medium: Glass, This transluscent green bowl has flared curved walls departing from a slightly kicked, but otherwise flat, base. The rim is straight, and a lip is tooled just below. The decoration consists of an overall pattern of sunken hexagones forming a honeycomb motif. Such motifs were adopted by Islamic glassmakers who found inspiration in Sassanian decorative prototypes. Since the honeycomb pattern was amongst the most popular and well-known motifs by the end of the ninth century, it was adopted by the metalworkers who prepared the bronze molds for the glassmakers.

In the art of the classical world, we see Roman and Greek matrons bending over their spinning: in antiquity, the spindle was part of every well-bred woman's household equipment. Surely then, this charming object belonged among the treasures of a woman who lived long ago. This may be the only surviving clue to her existence, yet somehow in its presence we feel we know her very well. « Less
