Antique Kerman, Persia, early twentieth century Inspired by the designs of Kashmir and Persian embroidered shawls, this exquisite antique Kerman has a grand central medallion surrounded by floral sprays and large boteh or paisley motifs as cornerpieces, all in shades of tan set against a Lapis Lazuli ground. The border resumes the tan coloration, but with all details rendered as fine outlines rather than through contrasts of color as in the field. As a result the carpet offers a rare combination of bold graphic opposition as well as linear delicacy and subtlety.

Scandinavian Carpet, mid 20th century This charming carpet with its border of allover geometric flowers derives from the tradition of Swedish flatwoven tapestries or Rollakan, but now rendered in thick luxurious pile. The field is mostly open with stylized floral compositions only at either end. The folky simplicity is set off nicely by the warm palette of soft golden and tans tones against cinnamon and pale blue.

Antique Shirvan, Southeast Caucasus, late nineteenth century A honeycomb network of fine serrated leaves containing tiny stylized shrubs and blossoms in reds and blues spreads with fine precision across the cool ivory ground on this classic antique Shirvan. Various minor borders of triangles, figure eights, and zig-zag stripes expand out from the filed, enclosed finally by a 'dragon' border in soft blue. Shirvans like this are the most finely drawn and tightly woven of antique Caucasian rugs. The lustrous wool nicely complements the delicacy of the color and draftsmanship.

The field consists of a monumental pattern of interlacing strapwork arabesques in shades of green, apricot, and red against a deep tan ground with sprays of smaller flowers as minor detail. The border adapts the strapwork arabesques to a longitudinal format and sets them against a warm apricot ground that beautifully complements the coloration of the field.
