This rare Victorian walnut cylinder desk c1885 belonged to Connecticut Governor Henry Roberts B 1853 D 1929. Roberts became alderman of Hartford, Connecticut in 1897. He became a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1899. He held that position till 1901. He also was a member of the Connecticut State Senate from 1901 to 1902. He became lieutenant governor of Connecticut in 1903. He held that position till 1905. He became the 44th Governor of Connecticut on January 4, 1905. Provenance supplied to buyer.This desk measures 36 inches wide, 76 inches to top of back, 30 inches to the writing surface and 22.5 inches deep. All original including finish. Even the felt writing surface that retains its surface marks and stains from the Governors constant use is orignial. This desk has the best interior we ever seen in a cylinder desk from this period. It has birdseye maple drawer fronts surrounded by rosewood with rosewood drawer knobs. Fine hand cut dovetailed drawers and frame joints. This stunning piece of American Victorian furniture was with out a doubt a special order, made by one of the important New York cabinet makers on Broad Street. Here is an elegant and massive Buffet made from solid oak at the beginning of the 20th century consisting of a bowed parquet top sitting upon the lovely façade centering a 2-drawer column surrounded by 3 storage compartments revealed by recessed paneled doors supported by a nicely scrolled apron standing on cabriole legs with claw legs. Antique Anatolian Kilim, Central Turkey, nineteenth centuryThis exquisite fragment constitutes one half of a small antique Anatolian kilim, which was originally woven in two parts and sewn together. The red field was dominated by two zig-zag vines that once formed a diamond pattern, with smaller hooked forms in blue green and apricot serving as space fillers. The monumental ivory ground border of hooked elements and serrated leaves is separated from the field by an interlocking reciprocal trefoil pattern. Anatolian kilims of this age and quality are prized by collectors for their bold graphic design and saturated color. In both regards, this example is so outstanding that our appreciation of its quality is hardly affected by its fragmentary state. Consequently, it could well belong to the decades after 1800. Antique Serab, Persia, late nineteenth centuryA boldly graphic design of linked hexagonal medallions in soft blue repeats across the soft tan open field of this striking antique Serab runner from Persia. Approximately similar half medallions fill the intervening spaces between the medallions. The edges of all these components are embellished with crenellations in gold. Although they pose a contrast in scale, the simple, narrow vinescroll borders repeat this color contrast of gold and soft blue, thereby giving the entire rug a strong decorative unity. Antique Kurdish Runner from Persia, late nineteenth centuryThis outstanding antique Kurdish village weaving has the graphic power and charm of the Gabbeh rugs from further South in Persia. A series of diamond medallions in blue, runs the length of the soft red field. Within and without small circular or octagonal motifs fill the empty spaces, imparting a lively dynamic quality to the entire design. An inner border of zig-zags frames the field, surrounded by an outer one of octagons with stars like those of the field.
