This is a very cute Prayer Chair made from solid beech wood by the end of the reign of Napoleon III. This adorable piece is representing the Easter Cross as its was depicted in Europe with the black Cross mounted with drape and the tools used to torture and kill Christ. Such representation is very common especially in France and Italy. Note that the fabric must be replaced and that a small part of the spear is missing. Circa date 1870. Dimensions 37"high/ 11"seat height/ 19"wide/ 17"deep.

Antique Ninshia, China, nineteenth century - This arresting antique Peking is the epitome of the reserved elegance synonymous with Chinese court weaving. The design of the entire carpet, border and field alike is made up of see-through fretwork octagons. In the field they are arranged in staggered rows with diagonal effects achieved by the varied use of color. In the border the color alternates in series, with broad guard stripes to define the border’s framing function. The palette is restricted to mid-and [ale- blue, mauve, taupe, and the cool gray tan of the ground. There is great complexity here, but it is subtle. One must seek it out.

Flowering trees spring from rocky outcrops surmounted by herons and blue jays, with a mythical phoenix at the very center. The main border consists of cartouches, each with their own interior miniature landscapes, repeating in series against a scalloped or diamond lattice ground. An inner meander border and an outer neutral zone flank the main border. The palette of cool mauves, blues, and sandy gold accentuates the reserved grace of the design.

Antique Sumak, Caucasus, late nineteenth centuryBased on the classic Caucasian ‘Sunburst’ or ‘Eagle’ design, this exciting antique Sumak has a series of medallions with radiating branches in ivory and soft blue, set against a rich terracotta field. Smaller geometric motifs occupy the space around the medallions. A ‘dragon’ border on ivory frames the field, flanked by minor borders of tiny rosettes, with one last outer in a ‘running dog’ or spiral wave pattern. The Sunburst design is well known in Caucasian Karabagh pile carpets, but it is unusual in the flatwoven Sumak technique as it appears here.
