A very fine set of French First Empire Porcelain, circa 1804, bearing the signature of the Schoelcher factory. The vast majority of French nineteenth century porcelains, commonly called "Old Paris" are not authored. The workshop of Marc Schoelcher was active at various locations during the years 1798-1834. The Schoelchers had a prominent salesroom on "Boulveard des Italiens" in Paris. Marc Schoelcher was born in 1766 in Fessen-heim, and came to Paris about 1789. He was not only an accomplished porcelain maker, but also a writer of note, publishing a book of the life of Handel and also an artist, and music critic. His son, Victor, was taken into the family business in 1819, and became a friend of Chopin, Berloiz, Pleyel, and George Sands: she speaks of him in "Histoire de ma Vie". A number of Schoelcher's pieces are on display at various museums, including The Metropolitan Museum, New York, and the Limoges, Musee National, in France. Here an allover mesh of sickle-shaped palmettes and rosettes arranged about an interlacing trellis of vines sprawls across a dark ground that contrasts dramatically with the rich golds and reds of the delicate floral details. An S-vinescroll border set against a gold ground provides the perfect framing contrast to the field, enhanced by additional guard stripes and a minor border of cabling. The open empty field is surrounded only by two borders - an inner one with diagonal fretwork, and an outer one with a barber pole pattern arranged in V-shaped, radial chevron configuration around the four cardinal points. But what makes this minimal design work so well is the color – the soft saffron sandy tones in combination with ivory and various hues of aubergine. This savvy balance of color and design is almost modern in its self-imposed restriction to a few effective components.
