Vintage Scandinavian Art Deco Carpet By - Rakel Callander – RC The Scandinavian carpet weaver and designer Rakel (Rachel) Callander (circa 20th century) is responsible for creating some of the most recognizable and memorable flatwoven rölakan designs. Unfortunately, the background and origin of this Scandinavian designer remains obscure. Carpets produced by Rakel Callander are signed RC and typically include compartmentalized patterns decorated with inset polygons and geometric motifs. Like many Scandinavian carpets, works by Rakel Callander feature classic colors with subdued saturation, stark patterns, strong lines and charming details like braided fringes. Antique Khotan Oriental Rug, Nineteenth CenturyThis magnificent antique Khotan is the epitome of classic East Turkestan rug design. A cruciform central medallion spews forth small pomegranates, surrounded by smaller openwork medallions, cloudbands, and rosettes. The colors of the field pattern vary enormously across the surface imparting a sense of deep space and a dynamic, ever-shifting quality to the design. This openness and delicacy in the field contrasts with the more solid rectilinearity of the enclosing cloud and fretwork borders. Antique Kerman Persian Rug by Master Aboul Ghasem Kermani, late nineteenth centuryThis exquisite antique rug is the work of the great "master of masters," Aboul Ghasem Kermani. Treading the line between ornament and pictorial representation, its shows a lush forest full of animal inhabitants, including the crowned lions and eagle, symbols of the reigning Qajar Dynasty. Ultimately the composition is the setting for the classic Persian legend of Leila and her lover Majnoun, who is shown kneeling and despondent as he gazes upon the image of his beloved.
