Antique Senneh Rug from Northwest Iran, late nineteenth centuryA stunning Herati pattern spreads in all its complexity across the field of this lavish antique Senneh. While this design is usually applied as a small-scale pattern of minute proportions, here it is blown up into monumental scale with a micro-fine embellishment of vines in the background. A classic turtle border retains the finer scale of this secondary field embellishment. But as impressive as the design may seem, it is actually the spectacular array of saturated colors that ultimately makes this rug, particularly the complementary effects of soft blues, reds, and rich saffron yellow. 44626 Antique Kashan, Persia, late nineteenth century - A classic Persian medallion design graces the field of this superb little antique Kashan. At the center a quatrefoil medallion filled with vines and palmettes and crowned with grand finials above and below floats amidst a rich array of palmettes and small flowers in shades of soft red, blue, and mauve, all on a deep sand ground. Undulating mauve- ground cornerpieces with lush vinescroll filler frame the field. The main border consists of stylized trees or shrubs, each with their own arched canopy, repeating around the field with minor reciprocal and vinescroll borders for extra framing contrast. The restrained pastel palette set against the dominant sandy ground makes this a first-rate decorative piece, despite the classical complexity of the design. Antique Agra Rug, early twentieth century - This extraordinary antique Agra does not derive from the repertoire of Indian or Persian carpets. Rather, it follows the format of the "ensi," a door rug or curtain used at the entrance to the domical tents of the nomadic Turkomans of Central Asia. This piece, with its fine detail and multiple borders of stylized vinescrolls, relates specifically to the "Pendje" ensi of the Sayryk Turkoman tribe. The soft golden and cinnamon coloration, however, is not at all Turkoman, but classically Agra or North Indian, and it tones down the dazzling complexity of the design.
