Portuguese Art Deco, circa 1920's - While quaintly traditional in its use of floral rosette motifs, this striking Portuguese Art Deco is remarkably modern in its linear, graph-like geometry. The jet black ground is smartly contemporary, providing an excellent setting for the diagonal color distributions of the rosettes within the graph matrix. The design is far more complex than it seems at first glance, just as the color is quite effective despite its limited range.

44661 Antique Sultanabad Sampler, Persia, late nineteenth century - Leafy vines and flowers in exquisitely soft shades of terracotta, gold, and blue make up this charming antique Sultanabad sampler or ‘wagireh,’ used to generate the complete pattern or matrix for a room-sized carpet. One quarter of a central petalled medallion appears at the lower right, while the various vines and leaves may be repeated to produce a larger design. Here narrow border would become a minor border on the larger carpet. Though asymmetrical and partial, this wagireh nonetheless makes a lovely little rug on its own.
