Germany 1904, printed after 1931 Kathe Kollwitz (German, 1867-1945) is regarded as one of the most important German artists of the 20th century (a great deal of information about her is available online - www.kaethe-kollwitz.de/ , for example). She began producing etchings in 1880, and from 1898-1903 she taught at the Berlin School of Women Artists. It is believed that this work - the original of which was created in 1904 - is from the von der Becke edition, printed between 1965 and 1972 from the original plates. USA 1920s-1940s Offered is a beautiful little etching by Davis F(rancis) Schwartz (American, 1879-1969). Born in Kentucky, Schwartz studied in Ohio & Montreal before beginning a career in art illustration. He worked as an illustrator for newspapers including the Los Angeles Times (after moving to California in 1903), but in 1915 abandoned commercial work for fine art. In 1924, elected as the artist for the State Board of Harbor Commissioners, he came to San Francisco, where he maintained a studio for some 30 years in the famous Ferry Building. His works are held in many public and private collections. This etching depicts China Camp, on the shores of San Pablo Bay, one of the northern reaches of San Francisco Bay. Today it is a state park, but in the 1880s a Chinese shrimping village thrived on the site, housing some 500 people from Canton, China. Pencil signed, lower right. England 1899 According to an expert in 19th century paintings and drawings at Bonhams, this beautifully-detailed pen and ink drawing was executed by F. O. Gallagher, who was known to have contributed to The Dome (an illustrated magazine and review of literature, music, architecture and the graphic arts, published in London 1897-1900) and The Studio (a late 19th century Arts & Crafts magazine).
