Unknown
Probably late 19th century.
This charming elf-type fellow - thumbing his nose as he sits astride the handle - adds a note of humor to an otherwise utilitarian object. Lifting the handle exposes the direct gear at the pivot point and raises the well-worn blade. Years of use and exposure have imparted great character to the piece. « Less

1978
At first glance, this unusual, whimsical piece probably doesn't "read" as a candle holder. But as the overhead detail shot shows, there are receptacles for four candles, as well as two hollowed-out "bowls" for nuts or candy. The works of New York-born Elizabeth Weistrop (American, 1916-1999) have been exhibited across the United States, and she was awarded many commissions and prizes during her long career. Much of her work - and this piece is a perfect example - displayed her strong connection with nature and realism. Wouldn't this look great lighting your holiday table? Signed in the casting, "E. Weistrop 1978." « Less

USA
Probably late 1970s
The origin of this dramatic piece is a mystery, and while it may or may not have been made by a "name" artist, it is very evident is that it was created by someone with a finely-developed sense of design and command of craft. This beautiful wall sculpture was built on a base of 3/8" raw, unfinished mahogany covered with hand-patinated sheet brass. Several pieces of wood, varying in thickness from 1/2" to 2", were then covered with sheet copper and brass and attached to the base. Hand tools were used to emboss the metal with various shapes and designs. The entire piece appears to have been covered with a coat of lacquer which, in darkening over the past 25 or so years, has highlighted the shape and depth of the hand-hammered forms. The piece is wired to hang vertically, but depending on the requirements of your space, it could just as easily be hung horizontally. « Less
