19th century
These two framed pairs of miniatures depict four aristocratic ladies, hand-painted, each in a gold plated oval within an ivory parquet surround. Three of the four are painted by the same person, whose signature is somewhat indistinguishable, while the fourth says simply, "Mary." Each presented on a black velvet background. The price is for both framed sets, and while we prefer to sell them together, we will consider breaking up the pair to sell them individually. The measurements below refer to the entire framed piece. The painted images are 3 1/2"h. x 2 1/2"w. « Less

France
19th century
This unusual 19th century floral was created using mother of pearl for the main elements of a bouquet of various flowers, tied with a blue ribbon. Those elements were then over-painted using translucent colored glazes, which allow the iridescence of the mother of pearl to shine through. Hand-written in ink on a thin strip of linen fabric attached to the reverse is,"Felicie Autier, Born in Paris Dec. 1st 1836." Framed in an oval walnut frame, with a brass accent and cream cloth mat. The measurements below are for the framed piece; the image itself is 8 1/2"h. x 5 1/2"w. « Less

Italy or France
Probably late 19th century.
Late in the 1st century B.C., the Roman historian Livy retold "the legend of how the Sabine women were snatched from their families at a religious festival to populate Rome, and how their hearts and minds were won over by violence followed by sweet words and childbearing" (stoa.org). This dramatic little piece represents that story. Many artists and sculptors have interpreted the tale, and this dramatic little piece is most similar to the painting, "The Rape of the Sabine Women" by Peter Paul Rubens (1557-1640). To clarify: in the context of the Latin language of the Roman Empire, the word "raptio" (rape) translates as "abduction." The double-tailed banner in the 11 o'clock position bears the initialism "SPQR" -- "Senatus Populusque Romanus" -- referring to the government of the ancient Roman Republic. The piece is mounted on a 10" x 10" wooden plaque covered in worn burgundy velvet; it is easily removed so that the wood can be re-covered. « Less
