Tongan Apa’apai club entirely carved with all over repeating panels and rows of incised geometric design. This piece has two glyphs located towards the handle including a stylised bird and a human figure with outstretched arms with each arm incorporating a frigate bird. A further glyph is located centrally, however what this represents is unclear. At the base of the handle is the remnant of the suspension element that has broken through. Overall the carving on this club is of outstanding quality and this must have been owned by someone of high status. This piece has a very dark reddish brown patina and would date to the 18th century or very early 19th century. Measures 67cm long. A rare authentic antique, pre-contact, most likely a 19th – early 20th century, ceremonial wooden hand drum, "Tifa" or "Kundu" from Papua, New Guinea. The hollow-body entirely carved from one piece of wood in elegant hour-glass form, the base handle decorated in traditional geometric incised designs. PROVENANCE: From an old Canadian collection of Tribal Art acquired by the owner's grandfather before WWII. CONDITION: In good condition considering its age, showing the age and usage. Encrusted with wear and natural old, very dark, glossy patina, with breadfruit sap veneer deposit on the top, some age cracks (as is common in old wood). DIMENSIONS: Height: 54 cm (21 1/4 in). Original 19th–20th century African Kurumba headdress adoné design in the graceful form of an antelope head with long neck and slender horns, decorated with horizontal stripes, rising from the top of the head, and echoed by the long forward-curved ears. The neck and the snout decorated with carved extensive geometric patterns, polychrome with ocher brown, black, beige and kaolin pigments resting on the  helmet shaped cap of hemispherical form, adorned with shells and bordered with incises and polychrome zigzag pattern encircled with a series of drilled holes.     The adoné headdresses are primarily attributed to the northernmost Kurumba region of Burkina Faso. They were worn on the top of the head as crests during the performance of ceremonial dances. The antelope is the protective totem of most Kurumba clans.   CONDITION: Worn-out with loss of polychrome, showing the age patina. Both ears have age cracks. Rim of the helmet showing woodworm damage with the natural light color the wood is completely dry. The surface of the headdress also showing worm holes through the wood and polychrome paint which is a clear evidence of age and authenticity. A rare authentic antique, pre-contact, most likely a 19th – early 20th century, ceremonial wooden hand drum, "Tifa" or "Kundu" from Papua, New Guinea. PROVENANCE: From an old Canadian collection of Tribal Art acquired by the owner's grandfather before WWII. CONDITION: In good condition considering its age, showing the age and usage. Encrusted with wear and natural old, very dark patina, with breadfruit sap veneer deposit on the top, some age cracks (as is common in old wood). The bottom with an old native repair using two metal plates and various nails and pins. The repair is not contemporary to the age of the drum but was done later. DIMENSIONS: Height: 67.3 cm (26 1/2 inches). Diameter at the bottom: 17 cm (6.69 inches).
