Historical Context: Bes was the dwarf god with a very large phallus. Dwarfs had always been associated with fertility and sex in Egypt. Some festivals were known to feature phallic symbols, from early New Kingdom through the Ptolemaic era.
Bes was considered a protector of women and children and and some women would tatoo Bes on their thigh. Bes is celebrated in physical sex and rooms came to be known as "Bes Chambers."
