A North American Indian pouch of the 19th century with very intricate bead work. The floral beadwork on one side is complete, except for the fringe. One “leaf†on the other side has lost some of the beads. This item has very fine craftsmanship overall.
MEASUEMENTS: Height: 6 ½ inches. Width: 7 1/8 inches

Antique late 19th – early 20th century, Oceanic Meddle Sepik, Papua-New Guinea, Iatmul People Lime Container. DETAILS: skillfully carved wooden finial in the form of the standing bird, painted in white, black and red, mounted on the hollowed out bamboo staff with cane bands.
CONDITION: no repairs or restoration, minor loss of paint, small crack and minor chips in finial, as visible in photo, beautiful age patina.
DIMENSIONS: Overall length including the bamboo pole: 96cm (37 1/2 in). Length of the wooden sculpture: 40,7cm (16in).
REFERENCES: “OCEANIC ART†by A. Mayer this is a lime container with finial from the Iatmul People, Middle Sepkik, Papua New Guinea (p. 231, object # 246).

A very rare Museum Quality Authentic Antique Oceanic leaf shaped ceremonial war paddle made of a dark brown hardwood rising from a rounded shaft, and flaring to an elongated tear shaped spatulate blade, each side carved in low relief with a characteristic for this region face of typical elongated form with large sagittate nose, circular eyes, and crescent shaped lips, the finial of the shaft bountifully carved with the head of an Alligator.
The paddle was made by very primitive stone tools, as determined by the irregular marks left on the surface of the wood.
Condition: The paddle is in good condition except for the broken tip of the leaf. The wood has a beautiful old natural glossy patina.
This Paddle had came from a Toronto house which was there before WWII, this is the first time that the Paddle is being offered for sale.
Length: 213.5 cm (84.5 in). Length of the blade 50.8 cm (20 in). Width of the blade 14 cm (5 1/2 in).

Authentic antique 19th century American Indian (Canadian Plains Cree from Saskatchewan) dance harness composed of black trade silk fabric with twelve rosettes white red and blue glass beads sown to hide discs enclosed by hanging feather attachments. The central panel of the bandoleer is constructed in a geometrical pattern beaded with emerald green and burgundy glass beads on a thick fabric.
The entire sewing was done by hand. These items come from a local Canadian collection of antiques which the owner had purchased many years ago from an estate sale of memorabilia of a Canadian officer who was stationed in the Canadian prairies in the early parts of the 20th century.
Measurements: Max Length 43 inches (109cm), Width 10 ¾ inches (27,3).
A near identical dance harness can be found from the exhibit from the summer of 2004 an exhibition at the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, Birmingham, England on the Plains Indian art and culture, entitled 'A Warrior I Have Been'. It appears in the catalogue on p. 111

Authentic antique late 19th century North American Indian beaded hide shoulder bag of rectangular form from the Great Lakes area. Constructed of very finely tanned hide and beaded with classical floral designs in rose, pink, light blue, green, navy-blue and two shades of yellow beads , on a translucent beaded ground trimmed by red cloth.
CONDITION: in good condition with a beautiful old deep patina showing the age and usage.
Dimensions of the Bag including fringes: 27 cm (10 5/8 in) by 23 cm (9 in).

The Mangbetu are a Nilo- Sudanese people, originated from ancient Nubia.
The kingdom used to trade ivory.
In the late nineteenth century, European settlers arrived in the area and spend the kingdom under the rule of the Belgians. This is the end of the kingdom Mangbetu.
Symbol of power and royalty this sumptuous royal large finery presents a rare configuration of cowries and leopard teeth.
It is extended by a braiding of coral beads, glass beads, metal beads, a silver Berber jewelry and a ceremonial bell.
