Established in 1903, the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshops) was a production community of visual artists. The workshop brought together architects, artists and designers whose first commitment was to design art which would be accessible to everyone.The enterprise, sometimes also named incorrect: Wiener or Weiner Werkstatte, Wiener Werkstaetten, evolved from the Vienna Secession, founded in 1897 as a progressive alliance of artists and designers. From the start, the Secession had placed special emphasis on the applied arts, and its 1900 exhibition surveying the work of contemporary European design workshops prompted the young architect Josef Hoffmann and his artist friend Koloman Moser to consider establishing a similar enterprise in Austria.   « Less

1959s Flygsfors Coquille Green glass centerpiece bowl. In 1952, Paul Kedelv created one of the most distinctive and interesting series in Swedish glass in the 1950s with his Coquille pieces. They are generally white glass cased in a colour, then cased in heavy crystal. Bowls and vases typically have white at the rim. Some, such as this one, have a separate line of white above the coloured layers. Much of the beauty comes from the contrast between the thick crystal and the coloured milk glass, particularly in the base where the 'root' of the coloured layers sit in a pool of clear crystal. The word "coquille" means "shell' in French. Pieces made after Kedelv left in 1956 were signed or labelled "Coquille" - as this one is. Those made before his departure are signed "Kedelv". The series was made until the late 60s. Some of the later pieces in particular, are very large. This piece is signed Coquille and Flygsfors 59 on the base. Very good condition save for minor base scuffs and two flea bits on the rim. Expanding upon the traditional offerings from the 19th century,Lobmeyrs successor Stefan Rath looked to the Wiener Werkstätte architects and artists for further inspiration in developing more progressive designs for service sets,decorative figures and glass chandeliers. In an era filled with mediocre copies and interpretations of earlier designs, the members of this artistic alliance, which was founded 1903 by Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, strove to conceive and produce articles which complemented the daily requirements and activities of their users. This alliance remains current, however, thanks largely to the work of the firms like Lobmeyr, who have developed products in close collaboration with the Wiener Werkstätte.The evolution of this firm through the foresight of Stefan Rath in coupling the highest level of craft with innovative design, has resulted in the company’s continued success. Dagobert Peche studied in Vienna between 1908 and1911.Startingwithmechanical engineering at the Technical Institute, he switched to the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, where he studied architecture. On completing his studies, Dagobert Peche designed carpets as well as china. Although his formal language at first revealed Baroque and Rococo influences, Dagobert Peche was soon keenly interested in standardizing forms and the new possibilities afforded by industrial mass production of crafts objects. In 1914 he showed work at the Deutscher Werkbund exhibition in Cologne.Dagobert Peche joined the Wiener Werkstätte in 1915. In 1916 Dagobert Peche became a director of the Winer Werkstätte. As one of its most creative exponents, Peched designed some three thousand objects, including china, furniture, book bindings, jewelry, fashions, textiles, and even Christmas tree decorations.
