Antique Farahan, Persia, late nineteenth centuryWhile antique Farahans are famed for their classical Persian medallion designs, this elegantly unusual example has a fine design of staggered boteh or paisley motifs inspired by fine embroidered textiles. The various botehs are closely arranged so that the dark ground in is little more than an accenting outline for them. The staggering of the various botehs also creates a subtle diagonal lattice effect. An ivory ground vinescroll main border supplies the contrasting frame, with terracotta minor borders making a transition to the design texture and coloration of the field. Antique Karabagh, Caucasus, late nineteenth century Among the great genres of antique Caucasian village rugs, Karabaghs are the ones that most often reflect the influence of Persian carpets from further south, as this splendid example does. Here a diamond red-ground medallion with a feathered contour floats within a hexagonal blue field defined by triangular spandrels and zig-zag edging. In the manner of Persian village rugs like Bidjars or Malayers, a consistent Persian Herati pattern repeats across the entire surface, with the various sections distinguished from one another only by outlines and changes in ground color. A lovely ‘turtle’ vinescroll border frames the field. Its red ground color enables it to merge visually with the spandrels to provide a strong visual frame for the overall composition. Antique Karabagh, Caucasus, circa 1900While antique Karabaghs generally belong within the village or tribal weaving tradition of the Caucasus, some like this lovely and unusual example reflect the impact of classical Persian design from further south. Here a series of overlapping medallions with hooked contours is set against a brown-black ground, producing an effect reminiscent of snowflakes. Within the more or less two-tone palette, the clustering of the medallions creates broad swaths of pale tan, while the dark ground is limited to punctuating or defining the clusters. The borders are virtually monochrome except for the dark outlining of the vinescroll, echoing the design approach of the field. Antique Bidjar, Persia, late nineteenth centuryA complex design of leafy, flowering vines in serial repeat symmetry unfolds down the length of this arresting antique Bidjar. Each portion of the repeat consists of vines in diamond configuration which spew forth leafy branches approximating a figure-eight shape. Smaller rosettes and palmette motifs fill out the edges of the field to either side. The vinescroll border is comprised of rosettes and serrated s-shaped leaves on a dark ground that contrasts effectively against the red field. The rich detail of the design is facilitated by the tight, fine weave for which Bidjars like this are famed. Woven in the Bergama region of northwest Turkey perhaps I the late eighteenth century, it preserves a design centuries older still. But the glory of this carpet is its complex border of stylized cruciform rosettes in reds blues, and golds set against and ivory ground. Minor borders of diamond rosettes and wave pattern flank and reinforce the broad main border. The palette is exceptional in the range beauty of its colors.
