This is an antique/vintage Chinese champlevé cloisonné covered box. It sits on four bun feet and is about 1-3/4" high x 3-5/8" wide x 2-3/4". The top is decorated with a scene of a man and boy figures in a garden near a lake with birds that look like ducks in the water. The sides are decorated with flowers and fans. It is marked China on the bottom, which dates it to 1890-1920. The condition is pretty good for its age, not perfect. There are a couple of small nicks in the enamel, here and there and some sticker residue on the bottom. I have not cleaned or polished the box. This is a beautiful and unusual box.   « Less

The figure is in excellent condition and has only one very minor repair in the middle of the long thin staff he is holding, which is securely attached to the Sennin in two places, and had a small fracture in the middle which was repaired without any alteration to the appearance and reinforced the strength of the piece; it is not visible unless very closely inspected. The piece is in impeccable condition overall and was constructed with an extremely fine attention to detail. It is a truly Museum-Quality example of 19th Century Japanese Bronze Okimono Art. Sennin, a word from Middle Chinese meaning "The Immortal One" and the corresponding Japanese Tale of Gama Sennin, are derived from a 10th Century Chinese fable in which an Alchemist named Liu Hai seeks out Chan Chu, the Three-Legged Money Toad (popularly used today in Feng Shui applications), and from the Toad learns the Secrets of Immortality.
