This is an elegantly simple desk made from solid and nicely patinaed cherry by the first quarter of the 20th century. This lovely piece is topped by a serpentine shaped yellowish leather top trimmed by gilt borders and honoring the serpentine shape of the top, which can be extended thanks to matching pull out leaves. The façade is simple and provides a 3-drawer frieze mounted with acanthus shaped handles and escutcheon. The pediment consists of boldly sculpted cabriole legs providing sturdiness. Note that leather is not original and estimated to be 10-20 years old. It is in used but still good condition. Circa date 1920. Dimensions 30”high/ 54”long/ 82”long with leaves out/ 30”deep. This is a handsome and decorative Trunk handmade from solid chestnut by the first part of the 17th century during the Louis XIII period mounted with large wrought iron hardware. Note that the hinges on the inside of the Trunk have been replaced at some point. Several scratches and dents can be seen here and there due to the age. This is a splendid Bookcase made from solid and nicely patinaed walnut by the second half of the 19th century. This very decorative piece is consisting of a flat molded cornice sitting upon a step-back façade providing a single door mounted with an handsome arched beveled glass pane surrounded by intricate carving depicting acanthus rosettes and foliates and flanked by 2 pairs of adorably turned tapered column, all standingon ball feet. The interior compartment is spacious with 4 original beveled wooden shelves. Note that that hardware and glass panes are in original condition. This rare Victorian walnut cylinder desk c1885 belonged to Connecticut Governor Henry Roberts B 1853 D 1929. Roberts became alderman of Hartford, Connecticut in 1897. He became a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1899. He held that position till 1901. He also was a member of the Connecticut State Senate from 1901 to 1902. He became lieutenant governor of Connecticut in 1903. He held that position till 1905. He became the 44th Governor of Connecticut on January 4, 1905. Provenance supplied to buyer.This desk measures 36 inches wide, 76 inches to top of back, 30 inches to the writing surface and 22.5 inches deep. All original including finish. Even the felt writing surface that retains its surface marks and stains from the Governors constant use is orignial. This desk has the best interior we ever seen in a cylinder desk from this period. It has birdseye maple drawer fronts surrounded by rosewood with rosewood drawer knobs. Fine hand cut dovetailed drawers and frame joints. This stunning piece of American Victorian furniture was with out a doubt a special order, made by one of the important New York cabinet makers on Broad Street. Here is an extremely comfortable pair of armchairs made from solid walnut by the middle part of the 20th century. This impressively massive pair is covered by floral upholstery trimmed by large brass nails and featured a boldly sculpted pair of acanthus shaped armrests flanking the large seat, all supported by a sturdy pediment with barley twisted stretchers that insure stability and sturdiness. Outstanding Wrought iron bed from the turn of the century. It is full size, headboard is 58" tall and foot is 40" tall. All in very sound condition with new paint and hilites.
