Detailed Blue and White Charger of the Death of Socrates, Diameter of Charger: 23", signed by A. Andrade, dated 1945. The description and visual of the Death of Socrates, is that Socrates opposed the Sophists, arguing that there are absolute, transcultural standards of right and wrong, good and bad. He argued , that once we recognize what is truly good, we will act in accord with that knowledge--hence his claim that "the virtues are a kind of knowledge." He also firmly believed that the cosmos is grounded in goodness, hence that a good person cannot suffer unduly and that death is not something to be feared. Plato recounts the last hours of Socrates' life in a moving dialogue. This is the end of his final speech, just after he had been condemned to death by the citizens of Athens, his home town. The method of execution was that the condemned should drink a cup of hemlock, a not uncommon mode of execution in that period of time of the classics. The detail of this charger recounts this passage and is signed by the artist depicting the Death of Socrates. 18th Century Santos with an Exceptional Gilt Frock and in with detail and good condition, H: 10" The early Santos makers worked in the European tradition of polychrome (painted wooden)sculpture. Typically, a santero carved and sanded with the use of a locally available wood then detailed to achieve the desired contour and espression. The next step that was done is the applied size (animal glue) and gesso (chalk in animal glue) this provides an ideal ground to achieve paint. There were times when colored bole (fine clay and glue) on top of gesso as a special preparation for the gold leafing. The analyzig of pigment types and colors are very useful in the dating of Polychromed Santos. The color used on this man holding a Holy Book is with a gold detailed robe, the use of gold symbolized luxury and was costly to use even in the Medieval times. It was ususally the rich patrons that frequently specified its use in commissioned works. This figure maintains its original glass eyes. Historically speaking the santeros who had access to imported materials used a range of woods. The softer woods were more desirable for the fine texture and straight grain, and for the durability and resistance to insects for the carving of the early Santos woods such as: Spanish Cedar, Cuban Mahogany or Honduras Mahogany, in adition to the local woods of that region including a variety of pines for the Santos. Exceptional Wedgwood Black Basalt Urn, with impressed mark, the neck of the Urn is with a relief of grapes and leaves, the body with classical scenes, H:10.5" Diameter:6" Wedgwood Pottery Historically speaking Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795) was the 12th child of potter Thomas Wedgwood, and his grandfather and great-grandfather had been potters, too. In his early 20's Joseph formed a partnership with the preeminent English potter of the day, Thomas Whieldon. Under Whieldon's eye, Wedgwood practiced with glazing, bodies, shapes, and colours. In 1759 his dreams came true when two relatives leased him the Ivy House in Burslem to allow him to start his own pottery business. One of the greatest boosts to the business in those early years was an advantageous marriage to a distant cousin, Sarah Wedgwood, who brought a large dowry into the marriage. The course of Josiah life changed and in 1766 he bought Etruria, in Staffordshire, as a base for his factory and a magnificent new house. Wedgwood was a constant innovator, a thinker, and a scientist. In 1782 he perfected a tool for measuring heat in kilns. On the basis of his work Wedgwood was elected to the Royal Society in 1783. Prior to that his innovation of Wedgwood introduced into the pottery field was the development of Queen's Ware, a cream-coloured, lead-glazed earthenware. This was durable china formed with a mixture of flint and white clay. In 1765 Wedgwood provided a tea service in this new material for Queen Charlotte, wife of George III. She was so pleased with it that she gave Wedgwood permission to call it Queen's Ware, and to style himself, "Potter to Her Majesty". Queen's Ware became an enormous success spread the name of Wedgwood across all of Europe. This was the precursor to the now Black Basalt Urn as we show here in pristine condition. In 1768 Wedgwood developed a fine black porcelain called Black Basalt. With this fine-grained stoneware he was able to produce copies of the newly excavated Etruscan pottery from Italy. The new innovation proved another huge commercial success. The surface was lustrous and smooth, with a purple-black sheen. Wedgwood's factory could scarcely keep up with the demand for candlesticks, medallions, tableware, and vases in the material « Less
