Rare & Important 19th C American Portrait Miniature Of An Angelic Blond Young Girl Sitting On A Crimson Tuffed Cushion Holding A Sprig Of Flowers In One Hand And A Lattice Basket Of Flowers In The Other, With Blue Silk Slippers On A Square Marble Floor And A Vivid Blue Sky With A Delightful Bucolic Landscape In The Foreground By The Charming Deaf Mute Artist John Carlin (1813-1891) Who Was Born In Philadelphia Where He Graduated From The Pennsylvania Institute For The Deaf. He Later Married His Wife Who Was Also A Deaf Mute And They Proceeded To Have Five Hearing Children. John Carlin Studied With John Neagle In Philadelphia Before Going To Paris To Study With The Academic Master Paul Delaroche. Upon His Return To The United States He Primarily Settled Between Philadelphia And New York City Becoming Americas Prominent Society Miniaturist. His Personal Account Book Which Equinox Antiques Has A Copy Of In The Gallery (Original Housed In The New York Historical Society) Records Over 2000 Miniatures Completed By The Art, The Client Painted, The Date And The Amounts Charged. To Support Himself And His Growing Family As An Artist Beyond Referrels He Presented At The Door Of Each Potential Client Following A Simple Knock A Letter To Read, Stating His Physical Condition, His Education, His Academic Recommendations From His Teacher, His Need To Work & The Satisfaction He Would Provided In Completing Their Likeness In A Portrait Miniature And The Rates Charged. A Copy Of This Letter Is Available To The Potential Purchaser. A Facinating Life Focused On Success To Excel Beyond Your Proceived Limitations. He Was A Man Who Lived Each Day Not Allowing Society To Limit His Potential In Making His Dreams Reality. John Carlin Exhibited At The National Academy Of Design From 1847-1886. He Was Also Considered A Fine Genre And Landscape Painter, A Writer And Poet. He Excelled In Looking At 19th C Classical American From A Unique Perspective Which Was His Own Determination To Be Accepted. Further Research, Documentation And A Future Book Are Currently In The Works Regarding This Artist To Be Completed By The Great Granddaughter Of The John Carlin & Family. His Obituary In The New York Tribune Included The Following LInes From His Own Poem "Mute's Lament" "My Ears Shall Be Unsealed And I Shall Hear." Rare Early 19th C American Folk Art Drawing Of "The Castleton Seminary" By A Student Of James Hope Who Was The Drawing Teacher At The School. This Student Assignment Was Executed On British Hallmark Sealed Paper Sent From England. We Know That It Was A Class Assignment Due To A Couple Of Others Done At The Same Time That Have Survived By Different Students Of James Hope. This Signed Work By Student Attended Castleton Seminary For Two Years (Circa: 1832-1834.) She Is Recorded In The Attendence Records At The College At That Time. The Work Is In Its Original Gold Leaf Shadow Box Frame Which Someone Covered Over Later With Black Paint. Surviving Under Its Original Glass It Is In A Superb State Of Preservation. Signed In The Center "Castleton Seminary" Followed By The Artist: Ms. Jane McCane At The Far Right Side. Rare 19th C American Portrait Miniature Signed By Artist: Anna Claypoole Peale (1791-1878) Of Anna Bachman Landis Of Landisville, Pennsylvania Signed Lower Right Anne C. Peale & Dated 1822. Anna Bachman Landis (1785-1846) The Sitter Was Born To Michael Bachman And Elizabeth Swarr, Members Of A Large And Important Mennonite Family In Pennsylvania. When She Married John "Swamp" Landis, She Joined A Larger And More Important One. The Landis Family Had Immigrated From Switzerland. Reverend Benjamin Landis Purchased Land In What Is Now East Lampeter Township, Four Miles East Of Lancaster, Pennsylvania From The Canestogoe Indians In 1718. His Grandson, John "Swamp" Landis Was Born In Lampeter Township In 1782. A Farmer In Centreville, He Married Anna Bachman. They Had Three Children Who Reached Maturity. In 1829, John Became Shopkeeper, Before Becoming The Postmaster Of Landisville. This Miniature Is Set In A Gilded Copper Locket Frame With A Braid Of Hair In The Aperture On The Reverse. Height: 2 3/4" Inches High. The Artist Anna Claypoole Peale (1791-1878) Was The Daughter Of James Peale, The Niece Of Charles Willson Peale And The Granddaughter Of James Claypoole (Philadelphia's First Portrait Painter). She Was Trained By Her Father And Encouraged By Her Uncle, Who Took Her To Washington In 1818, Arranging For Her To Paint President James Monroe And General Andrew Jackson (Yale University Art Gallery). Peale Began Exhibiting At The Pennsylvania Academy Of Fine Arts In 1811, And Was Elected An Academician In 1824. The Only Other Femaile Artist To Receive That Honor Was Her Sister, Sarah Miriam Peale, With Whom Anna Shared A Studio. Anna Had A Thriving Business, With Studios In Baltimore And Philadelphia, And Trips To New York, Boston And Washington. Her 1829 Marriage To Reverend William Staughton Ended In Tragedy When He Died Only A Few Months After The Wedding. She Married Again In 1841 To General William Duncan, Apparently Giving Up Her Work At That Point. Anna Claypoole Peale Was, Without Doubt, The Most Important Female Miniaturist In American.
