Victorian, circa 1860 Miniature pair Staffordshire pen holders/spill vases, each modeled as a fox gazing up at a bird which is sat in a tree above its nest. Shredded clay decoration to branches, ground and around the nest. Pink spill interior. Pen hole in the base. Dull gilt base line and decoration. Painted mark to underside. Generally good. Right facing: Kiln effect: staining. Bird and fox ears restored. Left facing: Kiln effect: shrinkage crack to fox neck. Restoration to base side and right hand branches. Delightful antique French meerschaum pipe, without the stem, carved in the form of a young girl. She apparently engaged in a lively interaction with her reflection in a vanity mirror. Rare and superb, this etui presents all the romantic elements one would associate with letters of the heart being delivered by courier! The tortoise shell body is elaborately decorated with inlaid gilt metal and silver, a charming floral design. Either end boasts a large blossom encircled with ever so delicate foliate tendrils and smaller bell flowers. The outer body of shell has been worked in a very interesting way; it appears striped. The inside shell cuff is in perfect condition. The outer shell shows some wear and there is some loss to the....must be hundreds!.of little metal insets. This piece is definitely from the 19th Century, so I suppose some signs of wear tell us that this etui was used! How many declarations of love and romance has it carried over the years? We are pleased to offer this unusual antique Russian sterling silver cigarette case. It is an interesting example of trompe l'oeil: the cigarette case is disguised as a woman's purse. Of course, it may actually be a purse! (Reminds me of a teenage girl trying to hide her smoking from Mom and Dad!) It is solid sterling and heavy: weighs more than 1/2 pound. Marks: Assay marks of Ivan Andreyevich, 84 silver standard marks, kokoskirk facing left, and maker's mark of N. Bilibin (1868-1890). The size is: 3 1/2" wide, 3 1/4" long, with a very heavy silver chain that is 16" long. The purse/case is over 1/2" thick. It is engraved with scrolling flora, including a center framed tobacco leaf.   « Less

Very unique and interesting cigar cutter, decorated with the wildest fantasy creature. A nude woman-something: could be a mermaid, spider-lady, bat-woman. You've got me. But I surely couldn't resist such a fabulous creation! Very Art Nouveau floral decoration also. The mechanism works just fine. Condition is good; there is a break at the base of the circular border of 'her' wings. I decided not to have it soldered, as this little collectable's value may actually be compromised by a repair. A fine piece of tobacciana! Dimensions: a good sized cutter, 4 5/8" long, 1.75" at the widest, weight 45 grams. Bears Sheibler's mark, and "Sterling".   « Less
