CHURCHILL, Alfred Vance, "114th Street Elevated" (so inscribed on reverse), oil on artist board, approximately six inches by eight inches, 13 inches by 17 inches framed. Born at Oberlin, Ohio, in 1864, A V Churchill traveled to Paris to study art there at the renowned Academie Julian, where he became directly involved in the flourishing Impressionist Movement. He returned to America to become Art Director of Iowa College (1891 to 1893), then Professor of Fine Arts at Columbia University in New York from 1893 to 1905. Having contributed significantly to the world of art in creation and instruction, Churchill died in 1949. This highly atmospheric scene of winter twilight in the city was painted during his years at Columbia. Superb condition.   « Less

A stunning oil on canvas landscape painting of a fishing scene possibly in Lindsborg Kansas. Signed lower left, dated and location- Olof Grafstrom 93(1893) Lindsborg Kas. The well listed Swedish American lived and painted in Oregon, Washington State, Kansas and Illinois. This is a magnificent example of his landscape genre.His paintings have sold for as much as $90,000! The framed dimensions are 38''W by 32 1/2''H and the sight measurements are 32 1/2''W by 26 1/4''H. Condition is very good, noting a recent cleaning and varnish and an old professional 1'' patch to the sky about 5'' down from the center. Probably original and very fine period frame. An excellent example of the painter''s work and would be a major acquisition to any major collection! Born in Attmar, Sweden, Jonas Grafstr m was in the Pacific Northwest in the late 1880s, living first in Portland, Oregon in 1886, and then in Spokane, Washington. He also taught for four years at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas and then moved to Rock Island, Illinois, where he taught at Augustana College until 1920. Beautiful oil on canvas by the well listed Chicago painter Charles Hagberg of a moonlit beach with the waves gently rolling in.This artist who is known for his seascapes exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 1890''s.This painting, being a night scene, would illuminate and sparkle with a picture light on it. The frame measures 30''W by 24''H with the image being 24''W by 18''H. The condition is excellent, with the exception of one old professional 1'' square patch and corresponding touch-up to the very top edge 6'' from the left side. This is a wonderful example of the artist''s well known genre and is housed in the original frame with a St. Louis gallery sticker on verso. A stunner for any collector! Born in 1879, she was a member and exhibited at The Socirty of Independent Artists. The painting measures 30 1/2'' wide by 23 1/2'' high framed, and 26 1/2'' wide by 19 1/2'' high sight size. The painting was mounted,cleaned and varnished in 1940 according to info on the back. There is 1 small paint chip far right side and perhaps a stray paint mark upper left quadrant. A fine watercolor and gouache of a Scottish highland scene shrouded in mist.A Scottish historical genre and landscape painter, he was born in Boharm and studied with Robert Scott Lauder (RSA 1803-1869). MacDonald exhibited frequently at the RSA as well as the RA from 1866-1876. He was elected ARSA in 1862 and RSA in 1877. Auction records in recent years have reached $50,000 for his paintings. He has multiple sales in excess of $10,000. This painting is circa 1880 and would have been done at the height of his creative prowess. Image size is 21'' wide by 14'' high at sight. Framed is 30'' wide by 23'' high. Generally excellent, noting some foxing and toning primarily to the sky. This would make a great addition to any Scottish watercolor collection.
