WIkipedia writes of Jazz: ''Jazz is a musical art form which originated at the beginning of the 20th century in African American communities in the Southern United States from a confluence of African and European music traditions. The style''s West African pedigree is evident in its use of blue notes, improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation, and the swung note. From its early development until the present, jazz has also incorporated music from 19th and 20th century American popular music. The word jazz began as a West Coast slang term of uncertain derivation and was first used to refer to music in Chicago in about 1915; for the origin and history, see Jazz. Jazz has, from its early 20th century inception, spawned a variety of subgenres, from New Orleans Dixieland dating from the early 1910s, big band-style swing from the 1930s and 1940s, bebop from the mid-1940s, a variety of Latin jazz fusions such as Afro-Cuban and Brazilian jazz from the 1950s and 1960s, jazz-rock fusion from the 1970s and late 1980s developments such as acid jazz, which blended jazz influences into funk and hip-hop. As the music has spread around the world it has drawn on local national and regional musical cultures, its aesthetics being adapted to its varied environments and giving rise to many distinctive styles.'' Notes from a recent exhibition of Polish Jazz posters in Chicago included the following: ''Up until a few short years before its collapse, the Soviet Union had banned jazz -- as a dangerously seductive Capitalist decadence. Indeed, jazz was contraband in most of the Socialist Bloc. The far more humane, so-called ''Polish Road to Socialism'' made a place for a jazz obligato. A guest concert by Stan Getz in Warsaw would draw stadium-size crowds. Such response was not unusual. Jazz flourished in small clubs, student circles, and, ultimately, with official sanction. Jazz offered rebellion; a release, a freedom often elsewhere enjoyed only in Polish graphic art. These posters tell much about public perception and reception of jazz in Poland. That emerges beyond the events and their appearance in art.'' Indeed Poland in the 1970''s and 80''s was a hotbed of artistic creativity - not only musically, but also for poster artists who were consumed by social, political and intellectual changes which were quite literally taking the country by storm. These posters are in very good condition and are being sold unframed: 1985 measures 38 x 26.5 inches and appears to have been printed in a small run of only 5000 pieces, and 1984 measures 38 x 27 inches. These posters were in the private collection of a noted jazz musician and producer and are only a couple of hundreds which we have just received. The others will be appearing in our ebay store shortly. Price is for both posters. All of our posters, prints and pochoirs are authentic, vintage items. From it''s somewhat humble beginnings, the Montreal Jazz Festival has evolved into a world-class, fill-the-streets-with Jazz kind of event which brings in tens of thousands of visitors annually. Jazz greats - well-known and just emerging, grace our city with their presence and their voices, and we are fortunate! Fortunate too to have this hand-signed early Festival silkscreen poster in excellent condition... I unfortunately don''t know anything about the artist, but I do know this is a wonderful, pristine and joyous piece... (Some have identified the trumpeteer as Miles Davis, but of that, I can not be sure) These posters were in the private collection of a noted jazz musician and producer and are only a couple of hundreds which we have just received. The others will be appearing in our ebay store shortly. Poster measures 22.5 x 32 inches. All of our posters, prints and pochoirs are authentic, vintage items. The political scene in Quebec has always been a source of inspiration for artists and social commentators - as well as for poster artists. As Marc Choko writes, inhis definitive works on Quebec posters: ''In Quebec, as in other parts of the world, the end of the 1960s and the decade of the 1970''s were marked by an abundance of social movements. The radicalization of certain independant political parties (those who wished to separate from the rest of Canada) after October 1970, the powerful rise of unions.... were reflected in the manner and material of a vaste number of militant posters. This one, produced by Michel Fortier in 1978 was produced for the ''Movement of Workers in the Music Industry of Quebec'' who were looking to unionize. It appears in Marc Choko''s L''affiche Au Quebec, page 166. This poster was in the private collection of a noted jazz musician and producer and is only one of hundreds which we have just received. The others will be appearing in our ebay store shortly. The poster measures 15 x 20.5 inches and is unframed. All of our posters, prints and pochoirs are authentic, vintage items. The politics of the province of Quebec have always provided inspiration for it''s homegrown poets, musicians, playwrights and composers. In the 1970''s and 80''s (and today!) More »
The politics of the province of Quebec have always provided inspiration for it''s homegrown poets, musicians, playwrights and composers. In the 1970''s and 80''s (and today!) there was a great uprising of nationalist sentiment amongst the French population of the province who felt that they had been treated as second-class citizens for too long. This social and political malaise was very evident in the outpouring of music and performance pieces - and posters of same - during that period. This poster was produced to celebrate the 350th Anniversary of the founding of the city (last year was its 400th anniversary). Of Quebec City it has been written: In 1608, when the French explorer Samuel de Champlain first glimpsed the site where Quebec City now stands, he wrote ''while sailing up the St. Lawrence, I discovered a place of exceptional beauty. There I founded the town of Quebec.'' As religious institutions and government buildings sprang up within the fortifications of the Upper Town, merchants and craftsmen settled in the Lower Town alongside the river. Quebec City soon became a valuable prize sought after many times during the wars of the 17th and 18th centuries. When it finally fell to the English in 1759, ''New France'' became a British colony. Today, Quebec City, the cradle of French civilization in North America, is a busy seaport, an important cultural, business, and research center and, of course, the provincial capital of Quebec. But most of all, it is still a city of exceptional beauty that exudes an old-world charm not found in any other city in North America. Each year nearly 4 million tourists flock to Quebec City to savor its charms and the beauty of the countryside that surrounds the city, and especially to immerse themselves in the exceptional cuisine that is a trademark of Quebec (Quebec City boasts more gourmet restaurants per capita than any other city on the continent). From natural beauty to historic architecture to gastronomic wonders, Quebec City has it all...'' This posters was in the private collection of a noted jazz musician and producer and are only a couple of hundreds which we have just received. The others will be appearing in our ebay store shortly.
