George IV, dated 1823 1823 Sampler by Sarah Edwards. Framed in an old ''molded composition over wood'' frame with rippled, old glass. Loose mounted over paper with wood and brown paper. The sampler is worked in silk on fine wool ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye. Simple embroidered border. Colours black, cream, pale blue, light brown, red, light green and olive green. Verses read ''Behold the day. Behold. it> is come the morning is> Gone forth the rod hath> Blossomed Pride hath> Budded. Ezehel 7 v 10''. ''The grass Withereth the> Flower fadeth but the> Word of our god shall> Stand for ever and ever> Isaiah LX verse 8''. Signed and dated ''Sarah Edwards her work Ano Domini 1823''. A good set of motifs, including a large house entitled ''Luxborough House in Essex'' (Essex is a county in the south east of England and home of Madelena), a dog, fir trees, a castle with guards, fruit basket, birds and potted flowering plants. Generally Good. A number of small holes and one small repair below the signature. No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Unevenly stretched. Frame showing wear and chips, but structurally sound and ready to hang. 12ins by 13ins wide « Less

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours black, cream, pale blue, light brown, greens and gold. Verses read ''Ye youths,who run the heavenly race> With fainting zeal,and sluggish pace!> Exert your strength;your zeal renew,> The prize_a glorious crowns''for you!> Behold,heaven''s witnesses decend> To cheer your path,and mark your end;> On all,they fix the admiring view> And shout_Rejoice: the crown''s for you.> Behold the Savour! Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-10. Verses read ''The Lord my pasture shall prepare> And feed me with his shepherds care> He ever will my wants supply> And guard me with his watchful eye''. ''Then let us not indulge despair since we partake our shepherds care> He is our rock and sure defence and none can pluck our soul from then> Come holy dove inspire my soul and all my fear remove> Let all my powers in praises roll and sing redeeming love''. No border, divider lines in various patterns. Colours brown, pale green, black, green and cream. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-9. Verse reads ''Notwithstanding all the advantages of Youth, few> young people please in conversation, the reason is, that> want of experience makes them positive and what they> say is rather with a design to please themselves than any> one else.''.
