THIS IS A MAGNIFICENT AND VERY RARE 18TH CENTURY PAGODA TOP LONGCASE CLOCK WITH THE ALL-OVER ENGRAVED AND SILVERED BRASS DIAL. THE STRIKE/SILENT REGULATION SET IN THE ARCH, THE SECOND HAND IN THE CENTER AND THE MONTH CALENDAR AT THE BOTTOM. IT IS SIGNED JOHN PEACOCK, LONDON WHO WORKED FROM 1765 - 1794. THE MAGNIFICENT CLASSIC LONDON CASE WITH BEAUTIFULLY FIGURED FLAME MAHOGANY VENEER HAS BEEN RESTORED TO A BEAUTIFUL PATINA AND HAS A FINE RICH COLOR. THIS CLOCK IS VERY UNUSUAL IN THAT IT HAS A FIVE PILLAR MOVEMENT, INSTEAD OF THE USUAL 4 PILLARS OF THE LATER CLOCKS. ONLY THE BEST CLOCKS OF THIS PERIOD HAD 5 PILLAR MOVEMENTS. THE CLOCK IS DRIVEN BY TWO BRASS ENCASED LEAD WEIGHTS CAREFULLY MATCHED AND A MASSIVE BRASS CASED BOB TO THE PENDULUM WITH A GRADUATED RATING NUT. Pretty brass Lantern Clock with a French 8 day movement which is TIME only. The clock has a nicely engraved dial and is signed Thomas Mudge - this is NOT a genuine Thomas Mudge signed clock. Lantern clocks were one of the first forms of clocks and date back to the 1600''s. Only the very wealthy could afford to have a timepiece as they were extremely expensive at that time. They have been reproduced since that time and this one dates from about 1900 to the best of our knowledge. It has the same movement as a carriage clock and the key it attached to the inside of the clock. It is keeping very good time and is in good condition. This is a beautiful French brass Morbier Wall Clock with enamel dial hand painted with flowers and the name of the retailer, as was common practice in the late 19th century. The brass surround is beautifully detailed with cherubs or putti. The face of the clock is supported on a wrought iron bracket which attaches to the wall. The clock has the same movement as a longcase clock and keeps good time. It has recently been overhauled by a master clockmaker and carries a 1 year guarantee. The weights are both original to the piece as is the large brass pendulum. It strikes the hour on a bell and repeats the hour a few minutes later. It was made ca 1880 and is in very good condition.
