Rubies - FJ.6561 Origin: Turkey Circa: 19 th Century AD Collection: Jewelry Style: Gold Coin Earrings Medium: Gold and Ruby The teardrop-shaped body of the earrings is comprised of two sections, the upper having multiple "panels" each with spirals in ascending order. Around the base are larger spirals from which the coins are hooked by means of double interlaced rings. The gold coins themselves are Turkish and covered in beautiful sinuous script. Crowning the top of each earring is a cabochon ruby, meaning they are cut convex, polished but not faceted. Jean Psalty started making western style furniture in Istanbul in 1867. He was a renowned furniture maker for the Ottoman Court (Dolmabahce Palace) and later influenced the style and trends during the early republican era (1920's and later). At its peak, Psalty had four locations at the PERA: Tepebasi, Galata, Tunel and Istiklal. The Buffet and the liqueur cabinet, both walnut, make up an elegant and functional pair. The cabinet opens up as a bar. Both in mint condition and bearing the stamp "Maison Psalty Constantinople". Both pieces are proud witnesses of an era dominated by western imports. With fewer similar Greek furniture remaining in the market, Psalty's skills as an artisan are starting to be better appreciated in time.   « Less
