Waterford Crystal is a trademark brand of crystal glassware produced in Waterford, Ireland, by the company Waterford Wedgwood , previously trading as Waterford Glass Ltd. The crystal business was originally founded in the city in 1783 by George and William Penrose; the production was of extremely fine crystal that became world-renowned. Financial difficulties caused their company to close, due to excessive taxation of the product. Later in 1947, Czech immigrant Charles Bacik, grandfather of Irish senator Ivana Bacik, established a glass works in the city, due to the superb reputation of the original glassware and by the early 1950s it had been taken over as a subsidiary of the Irish Glass Bottle company. Waterford Crystal Limited is currently a member of Waterford Wedgwood plc, formed through the acquisition by the then Waterford Glass Group of the famous pottery manufacturer Josiah Wedgwood in 1986. The Waterford Glass Crystal is a fine cut and elegant look and quality. The main factory in Kilbarry, Waterford City, today has tours of the factory, a gift store and it is a historical place to visit. Exceptional Pair of Wrought Iron Candle Holders, the pair is a circular chamber stick with a looped base, H:9 3/4", the base diameter is 6 3/4" probably from the 18th Century to 19th Century. Ironwork is any weapon, artwork, utensil or architectural feature made of iron especially used for decoration. There are two main types of ironwork wrought iron and cast iron. Wrought iron candlesticks were first being made around the year 1,000 B.C., when the Bronze Age gave way to the Iron Age. Artisans across Western civilization employed primitive smelting techniques to convert such natural iron ores, ingots, and nuggets into usable building material. Wrought iron differs from so-called cast-iron, and it is malleable, durable, and more delicate. During the Iron Age craftsmen created a few wrought iron candlesticks, but most of these pieces are now lost to time. It was in the Middle Ages, influenced by works of the British ironwork masters and the advent of the French Baroque movement, wrought iron became in vogue throughout Europe. Cathedrals, such as France's famous Notre Dame, employed wrought iron for ornamental purposes. Candle-smiths developed techniques to purify wrought iron in the 1700s. Iron makers throughout Europe used a technique called bloomery, in which carboniferous charcoal gets smelted with iron ore. The wrought iron candlesticks created by this bloomery process contains very little carbon--approximately 0.04 percent. Thus, the iron end product is extremely malleable and easy to work with. The process in 1854, by the Bessemer Converter had changed history by facilitating steel smelting on a mass scale. With the rise of steel came the fall of wrought iron and cast-iron. Production of European fine wrought iron candlesticks and candelabras virtually stopped. However, these early Candle Holders are very much in demand and in vogue for any decor.   « Less

We don't know too much about Heisey, but we know what we like. This unusual, single Heisey candelabra is marked (diamond H), has three arms and a center. We've searched and four light Heisey's seem to be rare. Old Williamsburg style bobeches and arms, but the actual candle holders are different - more stylish. The entire effect is modern and Victorian together. It's terribly good looking! Tall and heavy, stands 21 3/4" tall. Alas, if you love it, you have to love it warts and all. Sometime, long ago, someone didn't have access to a new ferrule and filled in the base with what passed for "Liquid Nails" about 60 years ago. Arms still come out. Slight scratches in this old glass, but nothing repugnant. If you have apathy for Heisey, like we do, all this striking piece needs is some TLC. Excellent condition--no chips, cracks or repairs--on this original pair of Belleek Parian China candle holders. As shown, and well-marked, this pair was a Collector's Society exclusive and offered in 1983. Each candle holder has a hand-painted sprig with pink rose blossom and foliage on two sides, set against a wood-veined background. Both are marked with the following on the bottoms: BELLEEK COLLECTORS SOCIETY WILD IRISH ROSE CANDLESTICK 1010 MEMBERS LIMITED EDITION 1983. Each measures 3 3/4" wide by 4 1/4" tall and, again, is in excellent condition.   « Less
