Beautiful antique painting on porcelain plaque depicting Psyche by the Sea. This plaque is beautifully painted the highest quality imaginable. The plaque is set in a contemporary antique style frame. This plaque has some light hairline scratches near the bottom of the plaque by her foot, you have to really look to see them. Once this plaque is hung on the wall, you don’t see them at all. The plaque has not been taken out of the frame for inspection of the back. From sight the plaque measures 5-1/2 inches wide by 8-1/4 inches high. Framed size 17-1/2 inches high by 14-3/4 inches wide. Exquisite antique painting on porcelain plaque signed Sontag. The painting depicts a beautiful woman with dark brown hair almost gypsy looking in her clothing. The back of the plaque is marked Made in Germany. It is also titled and signed in a blue glaze on the back. It is mounted in a beautiful custom frame. There is a tiny area of paint loss between the border and the lady's face. I believe an experienced restorer could make it perfect. The plaque measures 6 inches high by 4 1/2 inches wide. The frame measures 11 1/2 inches high by 9 3/4 inches wide. The painting on porcelain plaque has tremendous depth. The quality of this painting is unsurpassable. The woman looks so alive that you can almost hear her breathing. Sontag is considered one of the best realism painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Rochette was a very important French artist specializing in paintings on porcelain. His works are of the highest quality and very rare. The porcelain plaque is framed in a beautiful gilt bronze and champleve enamel handled frame inset in a gilt bronze footed tray. It could be hung on the wall, used as a centerpiece or displayed in a cabinet. This is a beautiful and very rare Objet d' Art. Both the painting on porcelain plaque and the champleve enamel tray are in superb original condition. From handle to handle it measures 12 1/2 inches across. The diameter of the frame is 9 1/2 inches. The diameter of the porcelain plaque is 7 1/2 inches. When used as a tray or centerpiece it measures 1 1/2 inches high to the top of the handle. It depicts a beautiful dark haired lady in very fashionable attire holding a racket over her right shoulder. The bottom portion of the border of the plaque is decorated with vine leaves. The frame is a Rococo style frame that has been restored. The porcelain plaque is in excellent condition with the exception of a miniscule scuff mark and a tiny hairline scratch. The plaque measures 6 inches high and 4 inches wide. Framed size 14 inches high and 9-1/4 inches widest width. There is some wear, especially on the frame, which we have shown in the photographs. The frame measures 22 1/4" in height, 18 1/8" from side to side, 2" from front to back, and weighs 5 pounds. The colored trim in the wood brings out the color in the print. It has pressed cardboard behind the print.
