Attributed to ETTORE SOTTSASS (1917-2007) was a grandee of late 20th century Italian design. Best known as the founder of the early 1980s Memphis collective, he also designed iconic electronic products for Olivetti, as well as beautiful glass and ceramics. This table measures 25.75 inches high, with a base that is 19 inches wide and 3 feet 8 inches long. The glass top measures 3 feet 11.5 inches. Condition, some use wear to base,and a small chip on the edge of the glass top along with some use surface scratches to the glass. This coffee tables design comes from the "Memphis movement".Memphis is, with Post-Modernism, a design language created as a reaction to Modernism; it differs from Post-Modernism in that it does not draw on historical architectural forms, and has a strong Pop inspiration.   « Less

Exceptional carving makes this European walnut sideboard different from others of this era. All original, full figured, cross legged men with amused expressions support the Gothic styled arch and crown. On the door is a three dimensional flying dragon so well carved it appears to be in motion. Heavy original, ornate cast brass hardware and brown marble inset top. Another two superb examples of American Aesthetic Movement furniture from the same estate as the Herter Bros. chest that we sold earlier this year. Fresh to the market, these two unique chests, have features that we have never seen before. The low boy has two surmounted flanking cabinets with beveled glass front and outer side, mirrored back and open inner side. The top of each cabinet has an open work brass gallery. The top of the mirror frame is an unusual marquetry, which looks to me like stylized clouds and stars. Both chests are solid mahogany with satin wood interiors. Each chest has large, very ornate brass hardware in a Moorish Taste. The low boy has three long drawers and a secret, spring loaded drawer beneath the top. The high boy has three small short drawers above three long drawers and a right side "hat box". This piece embodies the principles of Charles Eastlake and other influential designers of the time with simple, incised, turned and low relief decoration. Both pieces retain their original finish, hardware and mirrors. The care with which set was constructed suggests that it is from a leading New York cabinet maker's shop. Original finish, minor repairs, lightly cleaned and waxed. Original locks marked G. Bayer pat. Feb 6, 1873. Over all fine original condition. Hi boy 70" tall (with casters) x 33 3/4" wide, 21 1/4" deep. Low boy 77" tall x 62" widest, base 50" wide x 21 1/2" deep. Price 14,000 for the set.   « Less

Handsome Continental high back fauteuil, featuring a high, square back and seat covered in an early tapestry finished with brass tacks and edged in an undulating fringe. Beautiful carved walnut, molded and shaped arms, finely turned arm supports, legs and stretchers. Fine dark and light ( where finish is worn on the arms) patina, the frame has been lightly cleaned and re-polished. We have also re-tied the springs to give the upholstery an even look. The tapestry is in over all good condition with a hardly noticeable two inch split on the seat and fraying on the rear top edge which we believe is easily fixable. All original. 45 " tall x 22"wide x 33" deep with a seat height of 20".   « Less

Magnificent, American, Renaissance Revival/Aesthetic Movement, Birdseye maple and rosewood marble top chest in the manner of "Herter Brothers". This exceptional chest of drawers is signed on the back and under the marble by a Bridgeport Connecticut maker. Unfortunately I cannot read the name only the location. Every thing about this fine chest is of the highest quality and workmanship. Every detail is crisp and masterfully executed. The piece is crafted of highly figured Birdseye maple and rosewood, even the interior of the top drawer is detailed, sectioned Birdseye maple. All original, four drawers, Italian white marble and flat plate glass mirror. It has been cleaned and French polished. Excellent condition. 941/2” high x 53" wide x 24" deep.   « Less

American Victorian Rococo rosewood bookcase / curio. This is an early example of the Rococo style and lacks the polish of later Victorian furniture and yet is exceptional in its charm. Lovely proportions, beautifully figured rosewood, wavy glass and warm patina come together to form this fine piece of early 19th century cabinetry. Hand carved flower top and door panels, fine, rare, crenellated molding around all the glass on its doors. It retains all it's original blown glass panels and adjustable wood shelves. A superb example of Period American Empire furniture. All original, mirrored, marble topped chest of drawers. Beautifully matched, highly figured mahogany veneers throughout, compliment the tall gracefully formed mirror and arms. Both the mirror and the chest are set off perfectly by the original finely veined white marble top. The chest is comprised of three large long drawers under two smaller frieze drawers. The smaller drawers are banded by a delicate "egg and dart" style molding. The top, sides, and base all feature a curved ogee molding and the chest sits on four graceful bracket feet. The chest retains it's original flat plate mirror, which swings from it's original hardware and is of an exceptionally fine design. An added feature that I have never seen on an American chest of drawers, are the knobs, which are each inlaid with a bold star. This chest has never been stripped, we have repaired the small veneer losses and cleaned and French polished it back to it's original grandeur. There is one stable, hairline, shrinkage crack on each side of the chest. All the drawers work smoothly and we have a key for the top drawer locks. Over all fine original condition. 85" tall x 48" wide, 24" deep.   « Less
