Great and authentic Royal Vienna plaque or charger that is circa 1830. This is an early piece that shows all the hallmarks of a true piece from the Royal factory. The gilding is 1st rank and painting is incredible. Large 12'' size. $3,000 piece that is broken and could easily be repaired if you desire. Wonderful piece. The scene is Theseus guided by his mother finds the sword and the sandals left by his father. When King Aegeus of Athens came to Troezen, King Pittheus (son of Pelops) made him drunk and caused him to lie with his daughter Aethra. A child was then conceived, but of uncertain father, since on the same night also Poseidon loved her. On leaving for Athens, Aegeus, who ignored that the god had been with the woman, told Aethra that if she gave birth to a male child, she should rear him without telling who his father was. He then left a sword and sandals under a rock, saying that when his son could roll away the rock and take them up, she would send him to Athens. Aethra, not knowing herself who the father of her child was, did as instructed, and when Theseus was grown up, she showed him the rock, and he, pushing it away, took the sandals and the sword, and left for Athens. Late Edo Era, first half of the 19th century. A Tamba stoneware lidded pot, with a fitted and loop handled lid, with overglazing in white and brown Tamba style drip form, the base unglazed. Ceramics at Tamba (near Kyoto) go back to the Kamakura era (1185-1334). Early production in the large number of kilns at Tamba was mostly of large naturally glazed utilitarian storage jars (Tsubo), wide mouthed jars (kame) and bowls for grating (suribachi). Large pots were first made from clay coils and then finished on potters wheels, from which they were fired without applied glaze. Early in the seventeenth century (Edo era 1603-1868) the potters at Tamba began to use applied glazes, and produced a variety of container styles. Very good condition, some glaze chips around rim of lid, no significant problems. 15.2 x 18.4 cm, 7'' wide x 7.7'' tall.
