This particular weave is the first of its kind Kodo Arts has seen in 25 years of collecting. Worth a close look. Strips of bamboo are wound around the base held in place by underlying graduated descending vertical strips of rattan creating a most remarkable effect. Even more astonishing is that every horizontal bamboo strip has had both outer edges blanched lighter to give depth and texture. The handle is wrapped bamboo. c.1900. (7½" x 17½") (19cm x 45cm). Antique Japanese 'suzuri bako' letter writing box. Carved out of one piece of wood and then lacquered, the design is of Japanese plum blossoms. On the right are the Japanese characters, 'Kyoku Ten Koki o Gosen' which is the last line of a very famous poem by Fujita Toko, a samurai-statesman who played a huge role at the end of the Edo Period, to help end the shogunate system and open Japan to the west. He personally was instrumental in dealing with Admiral Perry. The poem extols the virtues of humanity and the spirit and was widely sung by samurai warriors at the end of the Edo Period. c.1875. Signed on the bottom of the jizo bosatsu (bodhisattva) is the date in Japanese - Tenwa 1 which is 1681. This bodhisattva of compassion is the Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva. His vow is to save all sentient beings. Often seen in priestly garb with tonsured head and holding the 'Hoju' or buddhist jewel of wisdom. The bottom of the stand he sits on is intricately carved with buddhist clouds and lotus flowers. We don't believe it is the original stand but it is a perfect match. Hands in fantastic condition. (1681). (12" x 7") (30cm x 18cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $100. « Less

This fabulously attired 'ningyo' antique Japanese samurai doll is part of the 'gempuku' ceremony which was a rite participated in by every samurai male child sometime between the ages of ten and fifteen. The gempuku ceremony represented a boy's transition to manhood. Within the samurai classes, this was symbolized by the shaving of the front locks of hair and the wearing of adult clothing and the adoption of a new, adult name. The ningyo here is serious and martial, which typifies the Edo aesthetic. Edo samurai dolls were designed to convey the ideals that were central to the samurai culture, namely courage, strength and dedication. This doll has sumptuous, rich silken brocade kimono (kinran) and lustrous white 'gofun' face and hands. This is the defining feature of Japanese dolls and determines their quality and has no other equivalent in any other culture. Gofun is a white composite paste made from crushed oyster shells and glue mixed with water. When applied to hard surfaces and burnished it creates a lacquer-like surface, very smooth with a lustrous sheen. This doll has wild side hair and a Ho imperial hat, sword and spear. Fantastic. c.1860. (9" x 5½") (23cm x 14cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $55. « Less
