Antique inlaid wooden inkwell. Made pre-Israel (Palestine) - first half of the 20th century at the height of the Bezalel Art School production. Measures 2 3/8 inches accross the top (square). A little over 1 3/4 inches high. Carved to look like a stack of books, in volumes I-V with a 6th, larger book placed on top of them (forming the lid). Beautiful detail to the carving, which shows top quality workmanship. The top is marked in Hebrew: YERUSHALEM, which denotes a pre-1948 date. It is inlaid with a bird, swooping down with an olive branch in it''s beak. The bird looks like a swallow. The lid inside has a red velvet lining, slightly worn where it has rubbed against the lid of the inkwell. There is a small crack on the inner right side of the lid, caused by natural wood shrinkage. Original hinges in good condition. A sturdy latch opens the lid of the inkwell and within is a small glass container. All in good condition. This inkwell is utterly charming in it''s bookish and peaceful themes. The wood has a beautiful patina formed over the years. Unusual pieces of Judaica of this sort are extremely difficult to find. Antique snuff box. Believed to originate early in the 19th century - circa 1830, possibly in Bavaria. Measures 3 1/2 inches long. Entirely carved of wood. Even the hinges are exquisitely made of wood. The bottom and sides are burl wood. THe sides curve in a full, rounded form. THe lid extends very slightly over the edge of the sides and is carved to appear as though it is being rolled back. The top of the lid is superbly handcarved with a pair of performers / entertainers: a man playing the violin, seated on a barrel. At his tapping feet is a dog, wearing a top hat and standing on his hind quarters, possibly dancing in time to the music. The man''s hair flies behind him. Circa 1890 Majolica Palissy pot and cover in the form of a tree stump. Exterior of the jar is decorated with a flower, a butterfly and a bird peeping out from inside its nest. A snake is coiled around a hollow in the tree, which forms the pipe rest. Cover is decorated with shells and a frog, with the finial molded as a toadstool beside a branch. Mottled ground with shredded clay decoration. Brown interior. Brown underside with three stilt marks. Generally good. Jar: A few flakes to stump on one side. Restored rim chips. Restored chip to rim of hollow. Cover: Shallow flake and a bruise to flange. Restored chip to shell. Repair to finial. 6.75ins high   « Less

Shredded clay decoration to ground and above the chicks. Dull gilt decoration and base line. Two pen holders to front. Good. No cracks. Small chip to shredded clay on ground. Rubbing to gilt. Kiln effects: shrinkage line to one side of base and a faint shrinkage line to large bird''s neck; slight kiln soot caught in the glaze; some staining (mainly to underside and reverse).
