Lithograph by Albert Brenet of the Paquebot Claude Bernard & Lavoisier of the Compagnie Maritime des Chargeurs Reunis, bought in Paris. Litho is from 1950''s (not later than 1962). These ships were built in 1950, and sold in 1961 and 1962 respectively. Lavoisier became a cruise ship, sailed under different names and was scrapped in 1966 after a fire in the Caribbean. Claude Bernard was sold to East Germany and became a school ship. From a collection of maritime and nautical ephemera collected over a lifetime by a former Dutch diplomat. Paul Berthon (1872-1909) studied painting and architecture É he designed book bindings, dabbled in ceramics, furniture and illustrated books É in his posters and decorative panels, of which he designed a prodigious number, he used a soft almost pious dimension, in dreamily gentle shades of pastel colors.'(Rennert) In Boules de Neige, Berthon shows the strange ethereal sexuality which can be found in much of his work; never blatantly sexy, his women radiate a soft yielding glow that gives them a spiritual beauty. Note how a perfectly harmonious effect is created with only a few shades of muted yellows, greens and browns. it has been said that Berthon 'stands at the very center of interpretation of art nouveau grace and beauty'. This is what is called a 'panneau decoratif' - it includes no advertising and no letterpress. It was meant to stand alone as a significant work in its own right.
