Hessian Soldiers with original paint decoration, marked ''Howes''. Howes was a Boston foundry that produced many styles of andirons in various metals during the 19th and early part of the 20th century. This particular pair is cast aluminum with cast iron log holders also marked ''Howes''. The log holders were found separately and adapted to the andirons for a perfect fit. The best-known pattern of early 19th century cast andirons is that of Hessian Soldiers. It is believed that they were inspired by the dislike of the mercenary troops brought here by the British in the American Revolution. Hence, they were being burned in effigy.
