This is an exceptional example of early Kyoyaki enamel work decorated with floral sprays on the rounded body with a lappet border on the lower neck and just above the base. The body is a hard finely levigated one with a very fine even crazing.The foot is beautifully finished and flat. There is no damage or repairs but some wear to the sparse gilding. Notice the use of purple a very rare colour in the repertoire of Kyoto ceramics. The base bears a stamped Ninsei mark and this has confused the Fukuoka Art Museum which has seen some very good photos of the piece. However to me this is npota concern as all pieces made at the Ninsei kiln in the 17th and 18thc were stamped with his mark.Were it not for the more common shape the work is good enough to have been that of Ninsei howevver the general opinion is a slightly later work with all the best points of a genuine Ninsei piece. The jar stands 11.5 in. or 29.5cm. tall and is approx 6.5 in. at its widest point. This is probably the best piece of Kyoyaki to have come onto the International market in many years. It has not been exposed to public scrutiny for many years if ever.I bought this privately in New Zealand and all the previous owner could tell me was that it had been in the family for many years and a distant relative had spent time in the East which may well have been where it came from.   « Less

Vase, dating from the very early 20th century. It is Japanese, and features very fine hand painted designs of chrysanthemums, daisies and a bird. The neck is decorated with gold circles and flower outlines. The background colour fades from soft pink on the neck , through ochre, then pink again at the base. Handpainted enamelled highlights with gilding. Handpainted flowers. Vase measures 29 cm high and 9.8 cm diameter at its widest (11.1/2 inches by 3.7/8 inch). Additionally, the repaired crack is only present on one side of the vase, leaving a "display side" available which is stunning and blemish-free. 19TH CENTURY, ANTIQUE, CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE PORCELAIN PLANTER WITH COURTYARD SCENE AND CALLIGRAPHY SCRIPT - This antique Chinese, porcelain, jardiniere was located after the passing of my mother, along with many other antiquities and valuables of various style and era. This planter has been used, but it is still in excellent condition. There appears to be some minor cracking on the bottom, but close examination shows that this may have been done at the factory when the jardiniere was manufactured. Close up photos reveal that the cracks don't go past the top layer of lacquer and have held up for over a hundred years without getting worse. The varnish covers the small cracks, so they can't even be felt. If anything, they ad a bit of character to the bottom of the jardiniere which is otherwise pretty boring. This Jardiniere dates back to the late 19th century, or possibly the early 20th century. It's almost impossible to tell unless you read Mandarin, or Cantonese...I don't. But, what really makes this jardiniere stand out and unusual is the Chinese calligraphy on the back side of the piece. Not much Chinese porcelain art was decorated with calligraphy, so that makes this an unusual and valuable piece. I don't know what it says, so if someone can read it can you please tell me the meaning of the words? The ladies of the courtyard, are exceptional in their detail and beauty. The coloring of this piece is also unusual and exquisite and not something that can be found every day. It's been so well made that the lacquer can still be felt raised above the porcelain and there are no chips, scratches, or other major damage the painting. Just the cracking on the bottom, and I'm not even sure that's damage but rather may have come from the factory. The Dimensions are 12" wide and 9" tall. The weight is approximately 5 pounds.
