Antique Tabriz, Persia, late nineteenth century - A scalloped ogival medallion surrounded by a dense tangle of undulating vines and palmettes replete with perching birds unfolds across the soft green field of this sumptuous antique Tabriz. The floral detail is rendered mostly in golden tones with sparing use of red for accents. The same approach recurs in the borders whose grounds alternate between green and gold. Tabrizes are renowned for their fidelity to classical Persian carpet design, but it is uncommon for them actually to equal such distinguished forerunners as this glorious example does.

Antique Aubusson, France, late nineteenth centuryA grand, flower-filled cartouche medallion of roccoco scrolls hovers amidst a rich lavender field on this unusually lavish antique Aubusson. A closer look reveals that the field has an internal lavender tone on tone-design of scrolls that receded subtly before the viewer’s eye. An ivory ground border of leafy scrolls, flower garlands, and cartouches frames the field, enclosed yet again by a golden-mauve outer zone with a simple striped edges. The palette of this Aubusson is extraordinarily rich and precocious.

Antique Kashan, Persia, late nineteenth centuryThis magnificent antique Persian Kashan has a striking allover design of spiraled vinescrolls. The patterning is cleverly arranged so that the vines seem to suggest a latent circular or heart-shaped medallions. A palmette vinescroll makes up the main border, set against a deep navy ground that contrasts with the red ground of the field, reinforcing a framing of effect for the entire composition, while the gold- and ivory-ground minor borders mollify this somewhat. The saturated brilliance of the color is matched by the lustrous velvety quality of the wool pile in the classic Kashan tradition.

Antique Tabriz, Persia, late nineteenth centuryRenowned for one of the most venerable weaving traditions in Persia, the carpets of Tabriz represent a tradition reaching back some five hundred years or more. This sumptuous antique Tabriz has a complex trellis design of golden palmettes and vines in an allover diamond configuration. Fine floral sprays fill the intervening space against a deep blue ground. The main border is a classic arabesque vinescroll in blue on gold, reversing the color scheme of the field. The lustrous wool sets off the color scheme to great effect, giving it the appearance gold and lapis lazuli jewels.

Here swaying vines with richly detailed palmettes in shades gold and apricot all repeat across a spacious soft aubergine field. The border consists of rosettes in alternation with floral bouquets against an apricot ground. While the design itself is clearly Persia, one may detect a certain Irish folk art quality in the brisk, bold drawing, just as the palette recalls Medieval Irish ornamental manuscript painting.
