Switzerland/Fly Twa (1940) Anonymous Poster art is one of Switzerland''s major contributions to decorative arts. For more than a century, Swiss graphic designers gave a strong personality to their art by synthesizing very different influences and cultures. The colors and layout of this poster clearly indicate how far swiss poster art had evolved and changed - gone are the Art Nouveau flourishes and the straight lines of Art Deco: this joyous examination of country life is clearly bucolic and picturesque. Remember, 1940 was just after the beginning of WWII and this poster would be trying to convince global, but primarily american, passengers of the safety (rather than risk) involved in flying to Switzerland with TWA. Lithograph by Albert Brenet of the Paquebot Louis Lumiere of the Compagnie Maritime des Chargeurs Reunis, bought in Paris. Litho is from 1950''s (not later than 1962), as the ship was in service for the CMCR and later (from 1962) for the Messageries Maritimes from 1962 to 1967. Ship was later sold to Asia and broken up in 1984. From a collection of maritime and nautical ephemera collected over a lifetime by a former Dutch diplomat. Please note that all of our posters, prints, pochoirs and ephemera are original, non-reproduction, vintage works of art.
