Here is an exceptional Dutch transitional rapier with wonder intricate detail. A very similar rapier is in the world famous Visser Collection. It is profusely chiseled with ancient battle scenes, equestrians and erotic male human figures as quillons emerging from the mouth‘s of monster heads! Exceptional condition with no repairs. Even the thin arms of the male quillon figures are perfectly intact. The grip is a 20th century rewrap, perfectly executed! Its fine German rapier blade is flattened diamond in cross section and stamped in the fullers 'IHN SOLINGEN', both sides, perfect condition! Over length about 42 ½â€. These Dutch small swords with human figure quillons are rare and desirable and this one is an exceptional example, exemplifying the precision of the sword make’s art in chiseled steel!

A DUTCH TRANSITIONAL RAPIER
Circa 1660
With long, slender, tapering blade of flattened diamond section with a deep fuller on each face of the forte stamped 'IHN SOLINGEN', the steel hilt comprising shallow cup formed of two assymetrical shells, arms, horizontally recurved quillons, flattened ovoidal pommel, and wire-bound woodend grip (possibly replaced), the quillons chiselled as half-length semi-nude male and female figures issuing from the mouth of a sea monster, and the rest of the hilt with cavalry battle scences, in low relief on the interior of the cup, and high relief elsewhere
