Big collection of Meissen porcelain figurines, 79 items. XVIII-XX century. Superb conditions. Meissen porcelian is the first European hard-paste porcelain that was developed from 1708 by Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus. After his death that October, Johann Friedrich Böttger, continued his work and brought porcelain to the market. The production of porcelain at Meissen, near Dresden, started in 1710 and attracted artists and artisans to establish one of the most famous porcelain manufacturers, still in business today as Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen GmbH. Its signature logo, the crossed swords, was introduced in 1720 to protect its production; the mark of the crossed swords is one of the oldest trademarks in existence. We are pleased to offer a fine and rare pair of Phoenix Ware art nouveau pottery ewers by T Forester & Son circa 1900 of tapering cylindrical form with angular handles, tube lined in the Rembrandt pattern. The ewers are offered in good condition for age and measure 35 cm in height. Thomas Forester where regarded as a leading manufacturer of earthenware and majolica and a pioneer of tube lining. The company started in a small works in High Street Longton in 1877and soon took additional premises in Church Street. He demolished the Church Street works and built the Phoenix Works in 1879. In the beginning of 1883 he took his sons Herbert and Victor into partnership. By 1893 the business was employing more than 500 employees. The company ceased trading in 1959. Here is a very beautiful late 18th century Dutch Frisian stoneware inkstand profusely stamped with decorative punches, intricate open work and dated “1797“ with a gorgeous deep green glaze! The owner’s initials “IK†appear on each side of the date. No cracks chips or restorations. What appears to be minor glaze losses is actually under glazing during manufacture. Here is a large beautiful English salt glazed character stoneware jug, circa 1840, bearing the likeness of Souter Johnny, who was Tam O’Shanter’s sidekick in the Famous Robert Burns 1790 poem. This marvelous jug is probably a Doulton. Lambeth product or also possibly a product of Derbyshire. This jug is about 6 ½†tall and 8†wide. It has the most beautiful speckled salt glaze that you will ever see! It is in nearly perfect condition, no cracks or repairs, but it has very minor, underneath, base flakes, see photo. A SUPER PIECE! Another example of this jug, but no where near as nice and missing its handle is in the Museum of London Collection and can be found in their on-line catalogs. Unfortunately missing the funnel top, unrestored, as excavated. A similar trichterhalsbecher, dating to the same period, but with the Hapsburg Eagle motif, and also missing its top, is illustrated in the book “German Stoneware†by Gaimster, color plate 8. (see last photo). A rare example of rare late medieval - early renaissance pottery, excavated in Germany and from a German collection. Price is firm. Thanks for looking!
