Rare & Important Early 19th C American Shaker Elder''s Rocking Chair From Watervliet, New York In Maple & Cherry, Very Early One Piece Elegant Turned Mushroom Front Arm Posts, Original Surface, Four Heavily Beveled Slats, Exceptional Patina, Provenance: The Culver Farm - East Dorset, Vermont - The Estate of Mildred O''Neal who was the interpreter in rapid finger spelling for Helen Keller at the commencement address at the Rochester School for the Deaf in New York. Mildred O''Neal stated this was one of the greatest thrills of my life was talking personally with Helen Keller. I purchased this lovely rocker from the estate which represents the first time in nearly 150 years that any contents of the Culver Farm have been offered for sale to the public. How the family acquired the rocker from the Shakers I have no idea but a photograph of Mildred O''Neal (1910-2007) sitting in the rocker accompanies the sale of this rare community Shaker piece. A new real rush hand woven seat has been put into the rocker to last for years was collected from the marshes in Hildene meadowlands in Manchester Village, Vermont.
